The Character That Vikings Fans Forget Katheryn Winnick Played On Bones
Katheryn Winnick played Lagertha on Vikings for six seasons. Originally designed to ride the coattails of Game of Thrones, the show was the first scripted effort by History, and boy did it pay off. But critical acclaim and high ratings pushed the show into TV Valhalla, and fan-favorite Winnick played a big role in that success. As Lagertha, shield maiden and wife to Ragnar Lothbrok (Travis Fimmel), Winnick brought fire and steely resolve to her role. Not content to stay on the sidelines, Lagertha stabbed and slashed with the best of them, and even raised herself queen of Kattegat for a time.
Vikings fictionalized the rise of the Viking Age, beginning with the Lindisfarne raid and ending with Norsemen landing in America. Winnick's character is based on the legendary shield maiden of the same name, accurately representing the relative freedom women had in Norse society. Lagertha became a jarl and a queen before her tragic end, but fans may not realize that before she kicked butt on Vikings, Winnick played another tough cookie on Bones.
Katheryn Winnick played Booth's last girlfriend Hannah
Winnick has a bit of notoriety within the Bones fandom as the last woman Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz) dated before finally hooking up with Dr. Temperance Brennan (Emily Deschanel). Hannah was a journalist Booth met in Afghanistan. After confessing his feelings for Brennan and being rejected, Booth reenlists in the Army. There, he meets Hannah, and the two start a relationship after he saves her from terrorists. Booth pushes the relationship to progress faster than Hannah wants, seemingly because he is trying to force himself to get over Brennan.
Despite being an obstacle to the show's OTP, Hannah wins over the Jeffersonian. She befriends Temperance and Booth's son Parker (Ty Panitz). But when a drunken Booth and Sweets (John Francis Daley) both buy engagement rings for their girlfriends, it seals Hannah's fate. Booth, a romantic and big lover of tradition, wants to get married. Hannah, a free spirit who needs to spend huge chunks of her life on the road in pursuit of stories, does not. The two part ways, just in time for Booth and Brennan to hook up and conceive Christine. Hannah's rejection helps Booth reevaluate his feelings for Bones. So for that, we're forever grateful.
