Smallville's Laura Vandervoort's Biggest Complaint About Supergirl
The CW's Supergirl series has been a great part of the Arrowverse series of shows. Sadly, the show has already kicked off its sixth and final season, and while fans are used to thinking of Melissa Benoist's portrayal of Superman's Kryptonian cousin, it isn't the first time The CW has hosted the hero in a series. In the early 2000s, Kara Zor-El appeared in the Tom Welling-led Smallville series. The character played a huge role in season 7 before becoming more of a recurring character for the rest of the series' span. Laura Vandervoort played Supergirl on Smallville, but upon reflecting on her time with the show, she does wish there had been a few changes in how her character was portrayed.
Via Digital Spy, Vandervoort revealed at a Smallville Reunion panel at New York Comic-Con last year that she wishes her character's ending on the show had been different, as Supergirl on Smallville lacked any real closure. She also said that the show had missed a major opportunity on exploring more about her character. Yet in addition to wanting more for her character's arc on the show, Vandervoort also noted that another key change Supergirl would have benefited from was a change in wardrobe.
Laura Vandervoort would have burned her wardrobe for Supergirl
According to Screen Rant, during the Smallville Reunion panel at New York Comic-Con, Supergirl's wardrobe was mentioned by moderator Garrett Wang as he joked that Laura Vandervoort probably wished she'd been able to wear more clothing while portraying Supergirl. Vandervoort's response was not kind to her character's wardrobe. "Yes please. ... I did ask them to burn the wardrobe when I was done with the show. I would've personally liked to have done it," the actor stated.
Given what Supergirl was often seen wearing on Smallville, it's understandable why Vandervoort would feel that way. The character was often seen in outfits that bared her midriff for really no reason. Her Maiden of Might costume was even a short red skirt and long-sleeved blue shirt that still revealed her torso. This is in stark contrast to the current costume in Supergirl that got a major change in season 5. The character ditched the skirt and tights for pants. As Melissa Benoist revealed in an interview for Entertainment Weekly, it's a change she'd been championing since season 1 of the show.
"Every time a writer from the show has come up, and it's freezing cold in Vancouver, I'm like, 'Guys, please can I not wear tights?'" she said. "I love [Kara's old costume]. I haven't changed it because it so works, and I think it is very Kara. I've always felt that — until recently, I'm like, 'Something's gotta give.'"
