MCU Fans Are Freaking Out Over Captain America 4 Announcement

Contains spoilers for "The Falcon and the Winter Soldier"

Wow. Sam Wilson aka Falcon (Anthony Mackie) became the new Captain America in the finale of "The Falcon and the Winter Soldier." Who could have seen that coming? Well, besides millions of comic book fans familiar with the "Captain America" series from Marvel Comics or the millions of people who streamed the first five episodes of the hit Disney+ series that takes place within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Though nothing was set in stone when Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) gave Sam the shield during the denouement in "Avengers: Endgame," that would have been a monumental symbolic changing of the guard to just suddenly undo. Nevertheless, Sam's doubts about taking up the mantle were made clear early on; when Steve told him to try on the shield and then asked how it felt, Sam's response signaled his misgivings: "Like it's someone else's."

But, of course, it's only natural for Sam to be ill at ease with the idea of becoming Captain America. Steve brought him into the Avengers, after all, and had embodied the American ideal for decades. As "The Falcon and the Winter Soldier" progressed, however, it became clear to Sam that America needed its Captain and that John Walker (Wyatt Russell) was not the answer. So, with a great deal of inner turmoil and conflict, Sam Wilson took up the mantle of Captain America in the series finale, very publicly announcing to the world that Cap was back. Shortly thereafter, Marvel Studios made its own announcement that the newest incarnation of the Star-Spangled Avenger would be back in "Captain America 4." And, like the American citizens within the MCU were overjoyed to see they had a new champion, fans of the MCU films are just as thrilled with the announcement of the upcoming film with a new Captain America at the helm.

Fans are excited with the announcement of Captain America 4

MCU fans took to social media to show their excitement at the announcement of "Captain America 4," with Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) in the role of the titular hero. "Marvel Studios has confirmed 'Captain America 4' with Sam Wilson!" user @WeAreMarvel_ exclaimed, throwing in a raising-hands emoji for good measure. User @EljayDestiny's enthusiasm was couched behind healthy skepticism, as they asked "IS CAPTAIN AMERICA 4 LEGIT?????" And user @sambuckynatt is champing at the bit to see the film, just one day after it was announced: "How long does it take to fully produce a movie? Asking in preparations for captain America 4." To that end, user @taylor_ashbrook offered fellow fans something to tide them over: "Now that #TheFalconAndTheWinterSoldier is over, here's Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan dancing to Rasputin to give us a sweet boost of serotonin while we wait for Captain America 4 to be made," they said, complete with the Entertainment Weekly video of the two dancing and the popular Boney M. song laid overtop.

Of course, civilian social media users aren't the only ones amped with the news. The man behind the title hero himself took to Twitter to express his gratitude to everyone who watched the series on Disney+. "What a Friday it has been... thank you to everyone who's seen 'The Falcon and The Winter Soldier!'" Mackie tweeted, adding the hashtag #SamWilsonIsCaptainAmerica.
