Cinematographer P.J. Dillon Reveals What It's Really Like Working With The Falcon And The Winter Soldier's Stars - Exclusive
MCU fans were stunned at the production levels and cinematography when the first episode of "The Falcon and the Winter Soldier" dropped in March. Since then, the series led by Anthony Mackie (Sam Wilson) and Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes) only continued to impress, with stunning visuals right up through the final episode —and even after the credits. So, who do we have to thank for Falcon's incredible flight sequences and all of those hard-hitting fight scenes? That would be P.J. Dillon, cinematographer extraordinaire.
Looper spoke to P.J. Dillon for an exclusive interview in which he dished on working with Anthony Mackie and Daniel Brühl on "The Falcon and the Winter Soldier," having previously working with them on "Altered Carbon" and "The Alienist: Angel of Darkness," respectively. He also explained what it was like crafting the cinematography around particular characters and which ones offered the most exciting background with which to work.
A merry reunion with Anthony Mackie and Daniel Brühl
Cinematographer P.J.Dillon was thrilled to work with Anthony Mackie and Daniel Brühl again on "The Falcon and the Winter Soldier." "Oh, it was great. I mean, they're both wonderful people and consummate professionals. And on a personal level, I got on really well with both of them on the previous shows. So it was great to get the chance to work with them again." Of course, the consensus for "The Falcon and the Winter Soldier" cast has been overwhelmingly positive from everyone involved.
"The Falcon and the Winter Soldier" was able to do what no MCU film has the time to do: deeply hone in on multiple characters at once for profound character studies. When asked which characters were most interesting dig deep on, Dillon said, "I mean, definitely Sam and Bucky, but Zemo as well. I love that character. I like Daniel, just on a personal level. But just that character is so entertaining to me that I enjoyed that."
Dillon also had high esteem for a new character introduced on the show: "But also Isaiah, that's a wonderful character. So yeah. So, Isaiah, I think, and Zemo are the two, but for different reasons." Carl Lumbly's role as Isaiah Bradley provided groundbreaking accountability to the U.S. government within the MCU for the rewritten history surrounding Black super soldiers.
