KonoSuba Season 3 - What We Know So Far
Out of the isekai genre of anime, there probably hasn't been one so beloved by hardcore fans as much as "KonoSuba: God's Blessing on This Wonderful World." The anime adaptation that premiered in 2016 is based on the light novel series by Natsume Akatsuki. Like other series such as "Sword Art Online" or "The Rising of the Shield Hero," the premise of "KonoSuba" centers on a character who is transported to another world and forced to survive. Yet what sets "KonoSuba" apart is its welcome use of comedy and satire in a genre that usually takes itself perhaps too seriously at times.
"KonoSuba" focuses on Kazuma Sato, a Japanese shut-in who, after his untimely death, meets the Goddess Aqua and is reincarnated in an MMORPG type of world. Kazuma is ultimately supposed to battle with the Demon King, but his team-up with the absent-minded Aqua, explosion-obsessed magician Megumin, and masochistic party member Darkness makes that goal seem too much for his dysfunctional party.
The anime series has produced two seasons, a movie, and a chibi-style spinoff show featuring other popular isekai series characters. But after all that, we're still left waiting for a potential Season 3 of the anime series. Here's everything we know so far.
When's the release date for KonoSuba Season 3?
There has not yet been an official confirmation for "KonoSuba" Season 3. However, this doesn't quite mean that the anime series is completely off the table, either. What really has fans hopeful for a new season of the anime series is a Reddit AMA from Kadokawa business producer Junichiro Tamura, which took place in 2019. Tamura was primarily involved to promote and talk about "The Rising of the Shield Hero," but with Kadokawa producing the initial "KonoSuba" light novels, questions about a Season 3 for the series came up. Tamura said that "KonoSuba Season 3 has a good chance if the movie does well."
There's been no official statement from Kadokawa about the performance of "KonoSuba: God's Blessing on This Wonderful World! Legend of Crimson." However, Crunchyroll reported that the film's opening weekend in the Japanese box office earned it 200 million yen. And Anime News Network reported that in addition to ranking eighth during its opening weekend in Japan, the film's U.S. premiere earned it $1,134,786. As of today, according to Box Office Mojo, the film has made a total of $5,078,942 worldwide. If those numbers look good enough to warrant Season 3, we could still be years away from it. With no confirmation yet on a Season 3 two years after the film, it's not out of place to expect it in 2022 or 2023 if and when it's confirmed.
Who's in the cast for KonoSuba Season 3?
With no confirmation yet on "KonoSuba" Season 3, a cast hasn't been listed yet, either. However, with the voice cast from Seasons 1 and 2 also being used for the "KonoSuba" movie, it's probably safe to assume that they'd also be returning for a potential Season 3. The voice cast featured Jun Fukushima as Kazuma, Sora Amamiya as Aqua, Ai Kayano as Darkness, and Rie Takahashi as Megumin.
The production staff for a potential "KonoSuba" Season 3 might not be as clear-cut as the voice cast. Per Anime News Network, Studio Deen was the animation studio behind the first two seasons of the series. However, for the movie, J.C. Staff was in charge of animation. Again, if the film was considered to have performed well by the powers that be behind the series, J.C. Staff could be the studio chosen to animate a Season 3. From a production standpoint, director Takaomi Kanasaki, scriptwriter Makoto Uezu, and composer Masato Koda are likely to return. All three worked on the first two seasons and the film in their respective roles.
What's the plot of KonoSuba Season 3?
There may not be an official plot synopsis for "KonoSuba" Season 3, but if confirmed, we can definitely figure out the plot details if we follow the light novels the series is based on. So far "KonoSuba" has followed the stories of the light novels pretty closely. And with 17 volumes of the light novel series, "KonoSuba's" anime has a lot of story elements to choose from. The first season of "KonoSuba" is based on volumes 1 and 2 of the light novel series, while Season 2 is based on volumes 3 and 4. In addition, the film seemed to serve as a sequel to the first two seasons as it was based on volume 5. In the film, the party travels to Megumin's home village and battle with Sylvia, who is a Demon King general. Kazuma and his party ultimately defeat Sylvia, even after she manages to fuse with two other generals to take on a more powerful form.
The next season would likely be based on volume 6 of the light novel and focus on Kazuma having a meeting with The Crown after word of his party's victories against the Demon King spread. However, this meeting with royalty leads to disaster, and Kazuma even winds up separated from his party for a bit. The movie also heavily focused on the budding romantic relationship between Kazuma and Megumin. So, it's likely this would also be further explored in Season 3 of the series.
