Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid S - What We Know So Far
After debuting in January 2017, the popular fantasy anime "Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid” is returning for a second season, which will be known as "Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid S." The "S" apparently stands for "Super Supreme Second Life Start."
The series, which hails from Kyoto Animation, was inspired by Coolkyousinnjya's manga of the same name, which follows a young woman named Kobayashi who lives an ordinary life and works as a programmer. However, the girl's life changes in an instant after she saves the life of an injured female dragon known as Tohru while drunk, as the next day Tohru, who can also appear in human form (albeit with a tail and horns), arrives at Kobayashi's door and insists on letting her repay her debt by acting as the young woman's live-in maid. Soon, a young dragon known as Kanna also joins the fray and lives with them as well.
Shenanigans obviously ensue as the trio embark on this new existence together and more dragons eventually join the story. The first season ends with Tohru nearly going to battle with her father, who is wholly against the idea of dragons and humans interacting. Luckily, Kobayashi is able to convince him to let Tohru live in the human world.
Fans of awesome anime have had to wait a long time for "Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid S." Now that it's finally getting closer, we've gathered up everything you need to know about it before you watch.
What is the release date for Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid S?
News of the anime's second season was first announced way back in February 2019, but its status was up in the air after the July 2019 Kyoto Animation arson attack, which killed series director Yasuhiro Takemoto and art director Mikiko Watanabe. The second season was delayed significantly by this horrible tragedy, but production eventually resumed, with Tatsuya Ishihara being named director of the new season.
News of the second season has been heating up for the last six months or so, which gave us a hint that new episodes were imminent. In December 2020, Kyoto Animation released several character-based videos that found Tohru, Kanna, Elma, and Lucoa recapping their lives in the human world. Meanwhile, new animation shorts have been rolling out in the lead-up to the show's return. The official trailer for the second season was finally released in February 2021 via the studio's YouTube account. It revealed that the new season will debut in July 2021. However, there is no exact premiere date.
Crunchyroll, which streamed the first season as it aired, is set to stream subtitled episodes for the second season as well. But it remains to be seen if Funimation will again dub the new episodes immediately after they air in Japan.
Who is in the cast of Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid S?
According to the series' official website, the cast from the first season will return for the second, including Mutsumi Tamura as the voice of Kobayashi. This means Yuki Kuwahara will once more lend her voice to Tohru, the dragon whom Kobayashi saved, while Maria Naganawa will reprise her role as Kanna, the child-like dragon who lives with them.
Rounding out the voices of the rest of the dragon characters in the show are Yuki Takada, who returns to voice Elma, the water dragon; Minami Takahashi, who is back as the voice of Lucoa, a dragon friend of Tohru; and Ono Daisuke, who is again voicing the male dragon Fafnir. The humans are voiced by Yuichi Nakamura, who returns as Takiya, Kobayashi's coworker; Emiri Kato, who reprises her role as Riko Saikawa, Kanna's classmate; Yuko Goto, who is back as Georgie Saikawa, her older sister; and Kaori Ishihara as Shota, the mage who lives with Lucoa.
As for the series' lone new character, Tomomi Mineuchi will join the cast for its second season as the new dragon, Ilulu.
What is the plot of Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid S?
Despite how close we are to the debut of "Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid S," we still know relatively little about the plot of the new season. The official trailer introduces viewers to the newest dragon, Ilulu, who is seen to have pink hair and is dressed in a cape and bikini bottom as a human. It also reveals a clash between the newcomer and Tohru. However, she also appears in her human form in Kobayashi's apartment.
It seems the new episodes line up with Ilulu's introduction in Volume 4 of Coolkyousinnjya's manga, the official description of which reveals that the character will cause problems for our heroes. It reads: "Tohru's just trying to enjoy life with her beloved Miss Kobayashi, but that's not so easy to do with Ilulu wreaking havoc around every corner! Though Tohru fights to protect Miss Kobayashi from the chaos dragon's destructive desires, Ilulu has been raised with the belief that all humans are enemies and doesn't believe their bond can be real. It's dragon maid vs. dragon fiend in the latest volume of this super-popular, monstrously funny comedy!"
