Mayans MC Season 4 - What We Know So Far
FX's "Sons of Anarchy" spinoff, "Mayans M.C.," just finished airing its third season, and it looks like the show still has plenty of gas left in the tank. Everyone's favorite motorcycle gang has already seen plenty of drama over its first three seasons, both in front of and behind the camera.
When the show began, main character Ezekiel "EZ" Reyes (J.D. Pardo) was just released from prison and was trying to become a fully patched member of the Mayans motorcycle club. He was also working as an FBI informant to help bring down the Galindo drug cartel, and trying to learn the truth behind his mother's mysterious death. Since then, EZ hasn't quite accomplished all of his goals, but he's still plenty busy.
Behind the scenes, FX fired co-creator and co-showrunner Kurt Sutter in October 2019 after several complaints about his treatment of the crew. Season 3 was the first without Sutter at the helm. But Sutter's fellow co-creator Elgin James filled in ably as the show's sole showrunner, and Season 3 was a hit. As the dust settles on the third season, FX clearly thinks the series has enough left in the tank. Here's everything we know about the future of "Mayans M.C."
What is the release date for Mayans MC Season 4?
FX hasn't yet announced an official release date for the fourth season of "Mayans M.C." But the network did at least spare fans some uncertainty. On May 3, 2021, FX renewed "Mayans M.C." for Season 4, doing so eight days before the Season 3 finale, as reported by Deadline. The outlet also reported that Season 4 would air in 2022. The cable channel didn't get more specific than that, but we can make an educated guess about the fourth season premiere based on previous seasons. FX renewed the show for a third season in November 2019, right before the Season 2 finale. Season 3 premiered in March 2021, which is 16 months after the renewal decision.
But like many TV shows filmed in 2020, the third season of "Mayans M.C." had to be paused due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so its overall production timeline was longer than usual. The last season filmed under normal conditions was the second one, which was renewed on October 1, 2018, and premiered in September 2019, via The Hollywood Reporter. That's a gap of about 11 months. Assuming the production of Season 4 can operate semi-normally, we'd put its premiere around April 2022.
Who's in the cast of Mayans MC Season 4?
FX and "Mayans M.C." showrunner Elgin James haven't announced any new cast members yet for the series' fourth season. Based on where the plot appears to be heading, Season 4 most likely won't introduce any major protagonists or antagonists but instead will build off of what the show has already established. That means J.D. Pardo and Sulem Calderon will be back as EZ and his love interest, Gaby, respectively. Clayton Cardenas and Edward James Olmos will most likely be back in their respective roles as EZ's brother Angel and father Felipe.
Gilly's (Vincent Vargas) mission to rescue Coco (Richard Cabral) and Hope (Vanessa Giselle) from Meth Mountain was a success, so they'll all probably be back. The Mayans' rivals, the Galindo Cartel, are still alive and well, which means Miguel (Danny Pino), Marcus (Emilio Rivera), and Nestor (Gino Vento) may also return. Finally, the show's recurring villain, Lincoln Potter (Ray McKinnon), finally returned to the series to threaten Adelita (Carla Baratta). Their story will continue during Season 4, so they're both safe bets to return.
Other cast members likely to return are Michael Irby, Sarah Bolger, Raoul Max Trujillo, and Emilio Rivera. In fact, the only character who may not be back is Isaac (JR Bourne), the leader of Meth Mountain, because he dies at the end of Season 3. But he might not really be dead, so even he's not off the table.
What is the plot of Mayans MC Season 4?
After the Season 3 finale, Elgin James sat down with Entertainment Weekly to tease out where the show is headed for Season 4. First up is the show's central relationship between EZ and Gaby, whom he earlier rescued from a gang of crooked coyotes. EZ and Gaby are the loves of each other's lives, but the big complication is EZ's devotion to the gang. At the end of Season 3, Gaby finally decided to leave EZ and attend nursing school. Season 4 will deal with the fallout of her decision and its effect on EZ. James indicated that EZ is definitely headed to his darkest place yet. But he's not devoid of hope either.
In terms of the ongoing gang conflicts, Gilly finally stormed Meth Mountain and killed its leader, the kingpin Isaac, in the Season 3 finale. But Gilly then noticed that Isaac had a tattoo of the grim reaper, which means that he had some affiliation with SAMCRO, the NorCal motorcycle gang from "Sons of Anarchy." "Mayans M.C." has been building towards a showdown between the Mayans and SAMCRO, and Season 4 might finally see it happen.
Finally, the Season 3 finale also saw the return of Lincoln Potter, the wildly corrupt assistant U.S. Attorney who's been pursuing the Mayans, and who's willing to have his targets killed outside the legal system. In earlier seasons, Potter was thought to have killed the son of Adelita, the leader of a Mexican revolutionary group that has often been at odds with the Mayans. At the end of Season 3, Adelita finally cornered Potter for revenge, only for him to imply that her son isn't really dead. Season 4 will no doubt have answers about Potter's plans, but if it's anything like earlier seasons, the answers will lead to more questions.
