The Goldbergs Season 9 - What We Know So Far
One of TV's favorite families is returning to the small screen. According to The Hollywood Reporter, ABC's highly-rated comedy "The Goldbergs" is gearing up for Season 9. Set in 1980s Pennsylvania, the show follows the antics of the goofy Goldberg family, which is loosely based on show creator Adam F. Goldberg's real life. "The Goldbergs" centers on the neurotic matriarch Beverly Goldberg (Wendi McLendon-Covey), her father Albert "Pops" Solomon (George Segal), her husband Murray (Jeff Garlin), and the three Goldberg kids Barry (Troy Gentile), Erica (Hayley Orrantia), and Adam (Sean Giambrone).
"The Goldbergs" has been running strong since its first episode premiered in 2013, and it has earned several awards nominations, and wins along the way. While it's achieved success throughout its 8 seasons, "The Goldbergs" was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and was at risk of being cut due to the uncertainty of production budgets and scheduling. Thankfully for fans, the wait is over, and "The Goldbergs" is officially headed for Season 9. Here's everything we know so far about the upcoming season's release date, cast, and what's in store for the family.
When is Season 9 of The Goldbergs premiering?
Since "The Goldbergs" Season 9 was only recently confirmed, there isn't any information yet about an official release date. When looking back at past seasons, though, they've historically premiered during the fall, so It looks like we can expect Season 9 to drop sometime around September or October at the earliest. We also wouldn't be surprised if Season 9 doesn't premiere until December 2021 or even early 2022, but be sure to keep an eye out for an official announcement.
Though we don't know when we'll be able to see "The Goldbergs" Season 9 yet, fans are already excited. Another user named ThundaDizan gushed, "This makes me so happy. More stories with the Goldbergs!!! The world just got a little better."
Who is in the cast of The Goldbergs Season 9?
A universally loved Goldberg family member will be missing from Season 9 due to a real-life tragedy. On March 23, 2021, George Segal died after complications from bypass surgery. His final episode already aired in Season 8, so it isn't clear how his death will be addressed in the show. Nevertheless, the family dynamic will be forever changed, especially since Pops and Adam were so close. Giambrone tweeted after Segal's death, "My heart is broken. I lost a dear friend. Working with George was an honor and some of the happiest moments of my life."
All of the remaining Goldberg family members are expected to return in Season 9. Viewers may also see several recurring characters, including Erica's boyfriend Geoff Schwartz (Sam Lerner), Adam's best friend Dave Kim (Kenny Ridwan), Adam's girlfriend Brea (Sadie Stanley), and the other members of Barry's posse: Rob "Naked Rob" Smith (Noah Munck), Andy "Ladies' Man" Cogan (Matt Bush), and Matt "Matty Ice" Bradley (Shayne Topp). Since "The Goldbergs" has also featured tons of guest stars from Weird Al to Hulk Hogan, we wouldn't count out more celebrity cameos in Season 9.
What is the plot of The Goldbgers Season 9?
Season 8 of "The Goldbergs" isn't quite over yet, but according to The Futon Critic, a press release reveals it's going to end with a big event: Geoff is going to propose to Erica. The episode summary reads in part: "Geoff shares with the JTP that he is planning on asking Erica to marry him and gives them the engagement ring for safekeeping. Like any good romantic comedy, several miscommunications and misunderstandings between Geoff and Erica's friends and family result in a potential derailing of the proposal." Assuming the proposal ends well, Season 9 could involve wedding planning for the young couple.
Though we don't know the plot details aside from Erica and Geoff's relationship, we wouldn't be surprised to see Adam and Brea's relationship mature as well. We also can't help but root for Dave Kim and hope that he gets a love interest in the upcoming season. And, as previously mentioned, Season 9 should address Pops' absence, though it's still unclear how they'll go about it. Either way, it's sure to be an emotional ride.
