The First Trailer For Dear Evan Hansen Is Causing A Commotion On Twitter
At long last, the trailer for "Dear Evan Hansen" has arrived.
The film is based on the 2016 Tony Award-winning musical, and has singer Ben Platt reprising the role that he performed on the Broadway stage (and which also won him a Tony for Best Leading Actor in a Musical). Directed by Stephen Chbosky of "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" fame, the "Dear Evan Hansen" movie stars big names like Amy Adams as Cynthia Murphy, Julianne Moore as Heidi Hansen, and Amandla Stenberg as Alana Beck.
Fans of the original musical were no doubt thrilled to get a first look at the upcoming film, which tells the story of awkward high school student Evan Hansen and an event that changes his life. All Evan wants is a friend, but he feels invisible to everyone around him. He writes letters to himself, an exercise his therapist has him do in order to help build his confidence. Evan ends up in over his head when a misunderstanding puts him into the spotlight and a well-intentioned lie leads to disastrous consequences. The musical addresses important topics like suicide and mental health, and includes a popular soundtrack of songs written by Justin Paul and Benj Pasek.
Of course, Broadway fans have feelings about the new film — and they weren't shy about sharing them on social media.
Twitter is torn over Dear Evan Hansen
The "Dear Evan Hansen" trailer has garnered the attention of both diehard fans of the musical and everyday folks who are just now finding out about the movie adaptation. Suffice to say, everyone has something to say about the first look at the film.
"OMG?? we're actually getting a dear evan hansen movie????? WOOOO," wrote Twitter user @maybeSheila. Twitterer @supermangeek101 enthusiastically declared, "2021 is gonna be the year of the musicals with In the Heights, Dear Evan Hansen & West Side Story all looking like phenomenal movies that all look like major award contenders! Dear Evan Hansen is gonna be the most powerful musical movie of the year that will save so many lives!"
Many are thrilled to see Ben Platt return as Evan, this time on the big screen. "I'm so happy that @BenSPLATT is reprising his role as Evan Hansen in the movie adaptation of the extraordinary musical that it's inspired by," said @DaffyWoody. "And I felt the exact same emotions from his performance in the trailer. I swear he better be nominated for the Oscars next year!"
Not all reactions to the movie trailer were positive, however. Some criticized the choice to cast Platt in the lead role. "Isn't ben platt 40?" questioned @joaoditd. (He's not — he's only 27.) Twitter user @leannemack884 joked, "Is this Evan going undercover to bust up a high school drugs ring?"
Others were put off by the fact that the trailer seemed to give away the whole story for those who are unfamiliar with the original stage musical. "Love it when the whole movie ends up in the trailer," posted @efp722. User @audreygrace seconded the opinion, writing, "Whoever cut the trailer clearly does not know what they're doing you don't even need to go see the movie."
Whether or not the "Dear Evan Hansen" movie appeals to fans of the musical, the adaptation is sure to send audiences on rollercoaster ride of emotions. The musical drama will arrive in theaters on September 24.
