James Gunn Has Bold Words About Harley Quinn In The Suicide Squad
James Gunn just continues to hype up Margot Robbie's work as Harley Quinn in "The Suicide Squad."
Robbie's Harley has been one of the highlights of the DCEU ever since the actress made her debut as the character in 2016's "Suicide Squad." That film received mostly negative reviews when it was released (via Rotten Tomatoes), but Robbie's performance as the beloved DC character was one of the few aspects of "Suicide Squad" that seemed to receive praise from even its harshest of critics. As a result, Robbie is one of the few "Suicide Squad" actors who still remains an active player in the DCEU.
The Oscar-nominated actress reprised her "Suicide Squad" role in last year's "Birds of Prey," a Harley Quinn-led DCEU standalone film that also brought important comics characters like Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett), The Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), and Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez) into the cinematic universe for the first time. Robbie is also set to play the character again in this year's "The Suicide Squad," a new DCEU film written and directed by "Guardians of the Galaxy" filmmaker, James Gunn. It sounds like the actress is going to get quite the chance to shine as Harley in "The Suicide Squad," at least according to Gunn.
Harley Quinn is at the center of a massive action sequence in The Suicide Squad
From the moment he started promoting the film, James Gunn has had nothing but positive things to say about Margot Robbie. With the release of "The Suicide Squad" only a few months away now, Gunn isn't showing any signs of slowing down the Harley Quinn hype train either.
Speaking with AP, Gunn spoke at length about his admiration for Robbie as a performer, saying, "She's such a great actress. She embodies the character. She's able to do the comedy. She's able to do the drama. And physically, she is a pure athlete and is able to do these stunts in such a graceful, magnificent, beautiful way." Gunn went on to say that he was so inspired by Robbie's versatility that he wrote the biggest action sequence of his entire filmmaking career for her, revealing to the outlet, "I wrote the biggest action scene I've ever done all around Harley, and it was so fun to create just on every level from working with the stunt guys all the way through to working with her. It's probably my favorite four minutes of film I've ever shot before."
Those are some bold words from Gunn, but based on the few trailers that have already been released for "The Suicide Squad," it does look like the filmmaker will be going to even bigger (and more graphic) places in the DCEU film than he did in either of his previous collaborations with Marvel Studios. Robbie's Harley has been at the forefront of many of the most memorable moments in the recent "Suicide Squad" trailers too, so it doesn't come as much of a surprise that there's at least one action scene in the film dedicated to showing off her talents.
It is, however, surprising to hear Gunn call the film's signature Harley set piece his favorite sequence he's ever directed, especially considering the kind of wacky and colorful action moments he managed to pull off in the first two "Guardians of the Galaxy" films. It's just another reason fans should be excited to see "The Suicide Squad."
