Cry Macho - What We Know So Far
Clint Eastwood may be in his 90s, but he remains one of the hardest-working actors in Hollywood. Not only does he continue to act in a myriad of projects, but he also directs with precision-like speed. Over the last few years along, he directed, produced, and occasionally acted in the likes of "The 15:17 to Paris," "The Mule," and "Richard Jewell." Even a pandemic could barely stop the silver screen legend from getting behind the camera, and now that movie theaters have begun to reopen, Eastwood has a new film for fans to take in.
Later this year, "Cry Macho" will become available to watch both in theaters and on HBO Max. It's part of the new Warner Bros. release strategy where people can watch new films in varying settings based on whatever's most comfortable for them during what's hopefully the tail-end of the COVID-19 pandemic. Here's everything you need to know about Eastwood's newest film so that you can see it as soon as it comes out.
What's the release date for Cry Macho?
The journey of "Cry Macho" from a 1975 novel with the same name to a star-studded movie has been a long one. Before Eastwood came onboard, Arnold Schwarzenegger had landed the lead role (via The Hollywood Reporter). The 2011 article states that Schwarzenegger planned on using the film as his big break back into Hollywood after serving as California's governor with "The Lincoln Lawyer" helmer Brad Furman ready to get cameras rolling. However, it appears as though the project fell apart, and the movie stayed in development hell for a while.
Once Eastwood picked it up, production moved full steam ahead. Filming began in November of 2020 (via Albuquerque Journal), which would've been around the time production could resume in many states after the pandemic started dying down, and now, "Cry Macho" has a release date of October 22, 2021. It will release in both theaters and HBO Max on that date. Audiences will have 30 days from that time if they want to check it out from the comfort of their homes, so make sure your HBO Max subscription is ready to go by that time.
Who's in the cast of Cry Macho?
In addition to directing "Cry Macho," Eastwood stars in the lead role of Mike Milo. The character's an award-winning horse breeder who no longer has his wife and his child in his life, so he succumbs to alcoholism; however, he soon finds new meaning in life when a young boy, played by Eduardo Minett, comes into his life. After starring in various television series, Minett will star in his first feature-length film with "Cry Macho" (via IMDb).
Country singer Dwight Yoakam, who starred in "Logan Lucky" and "Crank," will also have a part in the film. Outside of that, the movie will feature a ton of actors who may not necessarily ring any bells stateside, but you should get familiar with it in the lead-up to the film. The rest of the main cast includes Fernanda Urrejola, Ana Rey, Alexandra Ruddy, Horacio Garcia Rojas, Natalia Traven, and Paul Lincoln Alayo.
What's the plot of Cry Macho?
"Cry Macho" will follow Eastwood's character, whose best days are behind him. Estranged from his ex-wife and child, he doesn't have much to live for these days, but he soon receives the opportunity of a lifetime from his boss. The task is straightforward: He must bring his employer's child from Mexico back to the United States. The boy lives in an unsafe environment with his alcoholic mother, and his father wants him to be safe under his watchful eye.
As expected, the journey doesn't go according to plan, and surprising developments take place. It's safe to say that if you enjoy the likes of "Gran Torino" and "News of the World," then "Cry Macho" is likely up your alley. Considering anyone with an HBO Max subscription will be able to watch Eastwood's next movie when it comes out in October, you have no excuse for missing it once it's available.
