Trese - What We Know So Far
In its never-ending quest to cater to every audience possible, Netflix has entered the world of original anime series. The streamer is coming off of shows like "Castlevania" and "Yasuke", and they also have a back catalog of old anime shows for die-hard fans to watch. Now, Netflix is adding another series to its roster.
"Trese" is an action-horror series based on the graphic novels of the same name by Filipino writer Budjette Tan and artist Kajo Baldisimo, which were first published in 2005. The recently released trailer suggests that the adaptation will feature plenty of gore, as well as supernatural elements that are common across the world of anime.
Now that fans have seen a taste of what the new series will offer, you may be curious to learn more about "Trese." Because it's adapted from a comic series, there are elements of its plot that fans of the graphic novels are already familiar with, but even they may not know who was cast in the series or when it's set to debut.
When's the release date for Trese?
"Trese" is set to drop on Netflix on June 10 of this year. The comic book series, which is set in the Philippines, has become quite popular there since its initial release (per SyFy), and it's even won a number of awards. The series, which is still ongoing today, had almost been adapted into an anime in the past, but Netflix ultimately landed the rights to make the show a reality in 2018.
Now, almost three years later, the series is coming to fruition. There's been no word as of yet about whether "Trese" will return for a second season after the first one airs. Netflix isn't likely to renew the series until its debut, which will allow it to see how popular the show ultimately becomes across its service worldwide. If the show's a success, Netflix is likely to greenlight more episodes. If not, it might become one of many one-season wonders from the streamer.
Who's in the cast of Trese?
Because the series has Filipino origins, the English-dubbed version of the show is filled with an impressive roster of well-known Filipino American actors. Shay Mitchell of "Pretty Little Liars" is set to play Alexandra Trese in the English dub, while Liza Soberano will play the role in the Filipino version. The English dub is rounded out by actors like Manny Jacinto of "The Good Place," Darren Criss of "Glee" and "American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace," and Lou Diamond Phillips of "La Bamba".
Dante Basco, who played Prince Zuko on "Avatar: The Last Airbender", also has a central role in the series, lending an iconic voice to the anime. Given the impressive roster of talent the show has assembled, it's clear that Netflix has some hopes that the show will be a hit both in the Philippines and around the world, even in countries where "Trese" is a less well-known title.
What is the plot of Trese?
"Trese" follows Alexandra Trese, a detective who handles cases that have a supernatural component in her home city of Manila. As the series progresses, fans will also be treated to Trese's sidekick, a dwarf-like creature named Nuno sa Manhole, as well as her two twin bodyguards. Trese and her team take on monsters who have their own plans and agenda, and the series chronicles her journey to take them down.
Given that the series is ongoing, it's unclear how much the anime version of "Trese" will diverge from its source material, or how much ground the show will cover in its first season that's been directly lifted from the comics. The series looks to feature plenty of violence, but the adaptation choices remain an open question. Fans are undoubtedly eager to see the books adapted faithfully, but the makers of any good adaptation know when they need to leap beyond the pages to tell the story the right way.
