Why Benjamin Danz From Mr. & Mrs. Smith Looks So Familiar
"Mr. & Mrs. Smith" is probably more well remembered for the behind-the-scenes drama of its leads than for its plot. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie famously fell in love while on set, starting an affair that would result in a five-year marriage, six children, and a highly contentious divorce.
But besides being the setting of the biggest tabloid news story of the early aughts, "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" is a real movie you can watch! In it, Pitt and Jolie play a bored suburban couple who are secretly both assassins. They are both hired to assassinate Benjamin "The Tank" Danz, a prisoner being held by the DIA. Eventually, it turns out that Danz (played by Adam Brody) isn't a highly dangerous prisoner; he's a pawn. When the agencies that employ Mr. and Mrs. Smith discover that they're married to each other, they decide to set them up to kill each other. Danz, meanwhile, is just an intern. But where have you seen Benjamin Danz before?
Adam Brody was adorkable on The O.C.
Adam Brody first became famous as Seth Cohen on "The O.C.," a primetime soap opera set in California's Orange County. The show shoved teen-delinquent-with-a-heart-of-gold Ryan Atwood ("Gotham" star Ben Mackenzie) into the conservative and uber-rich county just south of Los Angeles. Ryan is adopted by the Cohens and becomes best friends with their son Seth. Seth Cohen was Brody's breakout role, launching him to "Teen Beat" heartthrob status. Brody starred on "The O.C." for four seasons, where he had his own Brangelia moment, dating and eventually breaking up with co-star and on-screen love interest Rachel Bilson.
"The O.C." also starred Mischa Barton as Marissa Cooper, Peter Gallagher as Cohen papa Sandy, Kelly Rowan as Kirsten Cohen nee Nichol, "Lost" star Alan Dale as the villainous developer Caleb Nichol, Jennifer Aniston's ex Tate Donovan as Jimmy Cooper, and Melinda Clarke as Julie Cooper. The show inspired two reality shows: "Laguna Beach" and "The Real Housewives of Orange County," the first Housewives show. That's right: In a way, we can thank Adam Brody for the entire Bravo TV lineup.
Brody played an evil rocker in Jennifer's Body
Adam Brody also had a supporting role in "Jennifer's Body," the cult feminist horror classic. Directed by Karyn Kusama from a script by "Juno" scribe Diablo Cody, "Jennifer's Body" flopped on its initial release. But it's been getting a critical reappraisal thanks in part to the Me Too movement. Brody played one of the Satanic rockers that sacrifice Jennifer (Megan Fox) in order to get famous. "Jennifer's Body" also features "Mamma Mia" star Amanda Seyfried, "Scott Pilgrim"'s Johnny Simmons, Academy Award winner J.K. Simmons, and "Strangers with Candy" creator Amy Sedaris.
"Jennifer's Body" was marketed to teen boys as a T&A-fest, when really it was an examination of toxic female friendships and complex trauma. The people it was made for were turned off by the ad campaign, while people who were into the ad campaign felt cheated by the movie, which often makes succubus Jennifer extremely gross to look at as she goes through trauma and monsterification thanks to the actions of Brody's character. Now that society is more open to understanding the particular dangers of being a woman, the movie is getting its due. "It just wasn't time," Fox told Collider. "It was a decade ahead of its time, and it took this long for culture to catch up."
Brody played another rich boy in Ready or Not
A decade after "Jennifer's Body," Adam Brody played another dude wrapped up in a sacrificial scheme in "Ready or Not." Samara Weaving of "Bill and Ted Face the Music" fame stars as Grace, a woman marrying into the rich Le Domas family. The Le Domas made a deal with the devil that makes weddings a real headache. Every time someone marries into the Le Domas family, they have to play a game chosen from the box that "Le Bail" (an anagram of Belial) gave to ancestor Victor Le Domas. Grace chooses "Hide and Seek," which means that the Le Domas have to kill her before dawn, or the entire family will die.
Adam Brody plays Daniel Le Domas, a member of the fam not 100% on board with this whole ritual murder thing. Other members of the Le Domas clan are plated by Andie MacDowell ("Four Weddings and a Funeral"), Henry Czerny ("Fido" and "Revenge"), Mark O'Brien ("Halt and Catch Fire"), and Kristian Braun ("Orphan Black").
