Fate/Grand Order Final Singularity - What We Know So Far
The "Fate" series is a colossal juggernaut of a franchise. It started as a notable visual novel released in 2004 and evolved into an impressive wave of manga, anime, and movie spin-offs that are still going strong today. The series started thanks to its first title in the franchise "Fate/stay night," which was released by Japanese game company Type-Moon. Today, the "Fate" series' latest gaming offering, "Fate/Grand Order," has expanded from its visual novel roots due to being a mobile turned-based RPG.
Clearly, the change did little to hinder the "Fate" franchise's success, as Twitter reported "Fate/Grand Order" was the most talked-about game on its platform in 2019, beating out other heavyweights like "Fortnite." Within that same year, "Fate/Grand Order" also surpassed the $4 billion mark in player spending despite being a free-to-play game (via Sensor Tower). With fans so passionate about the latest game entry, it was little surprise that "Fate/Grand Order" has played host to quite a few anime OVAs, shorts, movies, and television series. And the franchise will continue this trend with the upcoming anime movie "Fate/Grand Order Final Singularity – The Grand Temple of Time: Solomon."
Here's everything we know about the film so far.
What's the release date for Fate/Grand Order Final Singularity?
Fortunately, we won't have to wait too much longer for the release of "Fate/Grand Order Final Singularity – The Grand Temple of Time: Solomon." In May 2021, Aniplex released the official trailer for the upcoming movie, along with a release date. "Fate/Grand Order Final Singularity" will debut in Japanese theaters on July 30, 2021. The date is actually quite significant as it will also be the sixth anniversary of when the mobile game released; "Fate/Grand Order" came out in Japan on July 30, 2015, although the U.S. didn't get the game until two years later (via Anime News Network).
Speaking of a U.S. release, there hasn't been any word yet on the official U.S. premiere for "Fate/Grand Order Final Singularity – The Grand Temple of Time: Solomon" just yet. But it's likely that Funimation and Crunchyroll may stream the film sooner than later. Both Funimation and Crunchyroll streamed the anime series that precedes the film, "Fate/Grand Order Absolute Demonic Front: Babylonia," and Funimation was quick to reveal the first tidbits of news on the production of "Fate/Grand Order Final Singularity" on its official blog.
Who's in the cast of Fate/Grand Order Final Singularity?
It appears that "Fate/Grand Order Final Singularity – The Grand Temple of Time: Solomon" will feature a returning voice cast that's already worked on previous "Fate" anime series and films. Per Anime News Network, most voice actors who are returning for the upcoming film have worked on "Fate/Grand Order Absolute Demonic Front." As far as the voice cast, "Final Singularity" will feature Nobunaga Shimazaki as Ritsuka Fujimaru, Tomokazu Sugita as Solomon, Maaya Sakamoto as Leonardo Da Vinci, Rie Takahashi as Mash Kyrielight, Ayako Kawasumi as Fou, and Kenichi Suzumura as Romani Archaman.
On the production end, animation studio CloverWorks is returning from "Absolute Demonic Front" to head up "Final Singularity." Toshifumi Akai, who helmed the anime series, is directing the film. Yurie Hama is the chief animation director, and Keita Haga and Ryo Kawasaki are also returning from the anime series to handle the film's music. Tomoaki Takase is the character designer, with Type-Moon co-founder Kinoko Nasu serving as the scriptwriter.
What's the plot of Fate/Grand Order Final Singularity?
The plot of "Fate/Grand Order Final Singularity" will mainly mirror that of the final story chapter of the mobile game. In the game, Ritsuka and Mash are tasked with traveling to a seventh singularity to face Solomon, the immensely powerful king of magecraft. If they fail, humanity is doomed. This actually lines up with the ending of "Fate/Grand Order Absolute Demonic Front," which makes sense given that the upcoming movie aims to continue where the anime series left off.
In the final episode of "Demonic Front," Ritsuka and Mash are successful in their battle against Tiamat, ultimately preventing her from restarting the universe (via Funimation). Everything looks good, and Gilgamesh awards Ritsuka and Mash with Urk's Holy Grail. However, before the two can really enjoy their feat of saving humanity, their return to Chaldea yields another objective: the Grand Temple of Time Solomon has appeared. Additionally, Romani announces that Chaldea must face the temple and the powerful being. The trailer for "Fate/Grand Order Final Singularity" definitely indicates that this is the direction the upcoming movie will go in, as we see Ritsuka and Mash in battle and are given an image of Solomon smiling evilly atop his throne.
