The Boys Season 3: Get Your First Look At Jensen Ackles As Soldier Boy
Seasons 1 and 2 of Amazon's "The Boys" gave fans an insane ride — one filled with gritty action, eye-popping revelations, and over the top gore. The series takes on the superhero genre in a way that very few mediums have done before, showing the darker aspects of how super-powered humans might interact with society, and the secrets they hide beneath their brightly-colored attire. The show is based on the comic book series co-created by Garth Ennis and Darick Robinson, which ran from 2006 to 2012.
The ending of the show's second season raised many questions, such as the fate of the members of the Seven, and what will happen to the former members of the Boys now that they've gone their separate ways. Now that Season 3 has currently kicked into production, fans are buckled up and ready for whatever happens next.
As audiences impatiently await an official release date announcement for Season 3, "The Boys" showrunner Eric Kripke was kind enough to give fans a little tease of the newest Supe to join the fray: on June 7, Entertainment Weekly released a first look of "Supernatural" actor Jensen Ackles as Soldier Boy, in all of his patriotic glory.
Jensen Ackles takes on a very different look for The Boys Season 3
In the first look photo from Entertainment Weekly, Jensen Ackles is displayed in full costume and brandishing a large shield. The suit is hunter green and resembles a military uniform, with a black and blue chest plate that kind of looks like a bulletproof vest. Ackles may be difficult to recognize for those who are only used to his clean-cut look from his role in "Supernatural," as the actor is sporting a beard and longer hair in the photo.
Soldier Boy, the character who Jenson Ackles will be bringing to life in Season 3, is the original Supe to be affiliated with the Vought corporation during World War II: basically, if you think of Homelander as the Superman of "The Boys," and Queen Maeve as Wonder Woman, then Soldier Boy is a pretty direct parody of Captain America.
In describing the character's look, costume designer Laura Jean Shannon called Soldier Boy "the original badass," and described how the character's history and old-fashioned ideas on masculinity were a big inspiration while creating the look for the hero. "The Boys" creator, Kripke, had plenty of high praise for the show's costume designer, telling EW that, "[Laura Jean] has made a work of art that tips its hat to the WWII Soldier Boy from the comics, while taking it in a sleek new direction. And if you think the photos are cool, just wait till you see Jensen in action. It's one of my very favorite suits."
Kripke said that Season 3 will tell Soldier Boy's history, along with that of his own team of heroes, called Payback. If this costume is anything to go by, fans have a lot to be excited about when "The Boys" returns to Amazon Prime.
