Infinity Pool - What We Know So Far
When the acclaimed sci-fi horror film "Possessor" was released in 2020, it was a breakout moment for an exciting genre director: Brandon Cronenberg, who made his feature directorial debut with the 2012 film "Antiviral" and is the son of iconic horror filmmaker David Cronenberg (of body horror classics such as "Videodrome" and "The Fly"). "Possessor" is a bloody, phantasmagoric vision of a futuristic, high-tech assassin (Andrea Riseborough). With its stylish gore and prescient observations about social issues like surveillance and income inequality, "Possessor" teases that Cronenberg is upholding his father's bold legacy while embarking on a unique, exciting filmography of his own.
Now Cronenberg's third feature "Infinity Pool" has officially been announced, and it's got an exciting A-list star: Alexander Skarsgård of "True Blood" and "Big Little Lies" fame. While little has been revealed about "Infinity Pool" just yet, it promises to be another exciting entry in the sci-fi horror subgenre in which Cronenberg excels.
Here's what we know about the movie's plot, cast, and release date.
What is the plot of Infinity Pool?
"Infinity Pool" follows a young, wealthy couple named James (Skarsgård) and Em, who embark on a lavish vacation at an all-inclusive resort. But as the synopsis teases, "Outside of the hotel gates waits something much more dangerous and seductive, beyond the edge of paradise."
While exact details about the dangers awaiting the couple are unknown, "Infinity Pool" has been billed as a sci-fi horror film. Considering the mood of "Possessor," viewers should expect more mind-bending, bloody twists. The director has also given quotes about his filmmaking philosophy that hint at what is to come.
"One of the things that I like about horror is that it explores parts of the spectrum of human emotion in a way that other genres don't. That's satisfying to me [...] I want to come out of a film feeling like I've had some sort of transformative experience," he told NME.
But don't expect Cronenberg's films to get too meta along the way. "I'm more into science than the supernatural," Cronenberg said in an interview with Slash Film. "I like the idea of taking what's interesting to me about a metaphor... and put it more into a science fiction context."
Who is in the cast of Infinity Pool?
So far, Skarsgård is the only actor attached to "Infinity Pool." He'll portray James and will also act as an executive producer on the film. Skarsgård is no stranger to playing a wealthy husband with unexpected, darker depths — he earned a Golden Globe and Emmy Award for portraying Perry Wright, the abusive partner of Nicole Kidman's character in "Big Little Lies." Skarsgård is also well-known for portraying vampire Eric Northman in the HBO series "True Blood."
"Infinity Pool" is just one part of an exciting few years for him as an actor. Skarsgård starred in the 2020 CBS adaptation of Stephen King's "The Stand" and recently played Nathan in the 2021 monster movie "Godzilla vs. Kong." He's set to reunite with Kidman in the 2022 Robert Eggers drama "The Northman," and he will portray a "confrontational tech founder" in the upcoming third season of HBO's "Succession."
When is the release date of Infinity Pool?
"Infinity Pool" was first announced in June 2021, with filming expected to begin on September 6. The film marks the second collaboration between Cronenberg and production company Neon, which distributed "Possessor." The studio will co-finance and executive produce "Infinity Pool" alongside Topic Studios.
An exact date for Cronenberg's sophomore feature hasn't been announced yet, but judging from previous interviews, he's excited to get it made as soon as possible. "I'm very eager to make another film quickly. 'Possessor' took eight years to get made, and I don't want to go through that again," the filmmaker said in a February 2020 interview with Slash Film. "This time I have two other films that are actively in development with scripts written, and I hope that I can make them back to back to back with 'Possessor.'"
Specific details about Cronenberg's other project "Dragon" are still forthcoming, per SyFy Wire, but hopefully "Infinity Pool" will be another spine-tingling hit in his filmography.
