Dwayne Johnson Teases Black Adam's Power In Behind-The-Scenes Image
For quite a few years, it looked like Dwayne Johnson's "Black Adam" would never make it to the big screen. The professional-wrestler-turned-actor had been circling the role since 2014 and was even debating whether to play Shazam in the solo movie of the same name (via U.S. News) before eventually deciding that a big villain role would be more interesting. Now, after years of development, work on Johnson's "Black Adam" solo movie is finally underway.
Johnson be joined by an impressive cast, as the Justice Society of America will also have a large role in the story. Noah Centineo is set to play Atom Smasher next to Pierce Brosnan as the magical Doctor Fate, while Aldis Hodge will strap on the wings to play Hawkman. Also part of the JSA is Quintessa Swindell as Cyclone, while Sarah Shahi will play resistance fighter Adrianna Tomasz, the hero known as Isis in the comics. All this is to say that "Black Adam" has assembled a pretty impressive cast.
Although 2020's DC FanDome offered a sneak peek into what the film will entail, we've yet to see what these characters will properly look like in live-action. But Dwayne Johnson hasn't been afraid to keep fans excited with a few teases of what to expect from his roguish antihero.
Black Adam is devastatingly powerful
Dwayne Johnosn has occasionally teased what awaits fans when "Black Adam" eventually arrives in theaters, previously posting a shot of himself in a hooded robe to keep his Teth-Adam costume under wraps until the right time. But Johnson's latest photo posted to Instagram not reveals not only a good look at the "intricate and beautiful textured detail" of the suit itself, but also the scale of the film, which is directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, and Black Adam's power.
Clearly, the Black Adam costume has plenty of symbols etched into it, alongside some kind of metallic collar around the neck. Johnson also noted that "this is not your typical DC or Marvel padded muscle suit." As for the temple set, Johnson wrote that it's the victim of "enormous and appropriate destruction" thanks to the anti-hero's thunderous abilities. It doesn't look like Black Adam will be pulling his punches against whomever he's fighting in the film, whether that's the JSA or another villain that hasn't been announced just yet. As Johnson himself put it, "As we all know, superheroes have a code of justice and don't kill the bad guys. But, Black Adam does." Aldis Hodge's Hawkman might want to keep those wings strapped on a bit tighter.
It'll be interesting to see where "Black Adam" fits within the continuity of the other DC films, especially since Dwayne Johnson keeps referring back to the fact that "the hierarchy of power in the DC UNIVERSE is changing." Only time will tell how Teth-Adam shakes things up.
"Black Adam" is scheduled to hit theaters on July 29, 2022.
