What We Do In The Shadows Season 3 Teaser Puts The VR In Vampire

There's just something about vampires. The immortal monster who walks among humanity, so much like us in some respects but so very different in others. The gothic figure from literature who stands caught between the worlds of the living and the dead, never truly at home in either. The horror of the weight of years blessed and cursed with immortality, destined to live forever but constantly struggling to find anything worth living for. Vampires are epic figures of tragedy — and awful roommates, as it turns out.

In 2014 filmmakers, Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement wrote and directed "What We Do in the Shadows," a black comedy mockumentary that's a demonic blend of "Interview with the Vampire" and "This Is Spinal Tap." Much like a vampire, the "What We Do in the Shadows" IP has lived on, spawning a spin-off television series on the FX network of the same name — one whose Season 3 teaser promises more vampiric mayhem, this time in VR.

The vampiric cult classic

Like the original film that came before it, the television version of "What We Do in the Shadows" features a group of vampires living together — this time in Staten Island, New York rather than Auckland, New Zealand. The series focuses on four fiendish bloodsuckers: Nandor (Kayvan Novak) a former warlord of the Ottoman Empire; Nadja (Natasia Demetriou), a former peasant from eastern Europe; English nobleman Laszlo (Matt Berry), Nadja's-husband-slash-vampiric-spawn; and Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch), a psychic vampire who lacks the fear of sunlight and thirst for blood and instead feeds off the mental misery of his office co-workers. Looking after their needs is Guillermo (Harvey Guillén), an ordinary mortal in service to Nandor with hopes of becoming a vampire himself.

Over the course of the past two seasons, this unlikely vampiric cabal have careened headlong from one catastrophe to another — with the Season 2 finale, "Theatre Des Vampires," seeing the group about to be executed for their various foul-ups.

Unanswered questions, tantalizing hints

The teaser for "What We Do in the Shadows" Season 3 itself provides a first-person view as Nandor takes a walk in the sunshine, commenting on all the lovely things around him. We slowly come to realize he's wearing a VR headset, and Laszlo, Guillermo, and Colin are looking on. The teaser ends with Nandor having a sudden encounter with a wall, which puts a damper on his cheerful enthusiasm.

Seeing three of the four vampires together again bodes well for the survival of the clique, but one wonders just how they managed to survive the events of the vampiric council's trap at the end of Season 2. At the very least, it seems to indicate the gang is back at their building and living whatever approximates a normal existence for them.

It'll be interesting to see how the writing team for "What We Do in the Shadows" comes up with to explain away the restored status quo, and we definitely want to see just what happens next.

"What We Do in the Shadows" Season 3 debuts on September 2 on FX, with episodes available to stream on FX on Hulu the day after their cable premiere.
