Loki's Costume Designer Explains The True Meaning Behind Sylvie's Broken Horn - Exclusive
Sylvie (Sophia di Martino), the Female Loki variant from the "Loki" Disney+ original series, is one of the most fascinating characters the Marvel Cinematic Universe has put out in some time. A big part of her intrigue is her unique costume — one that's identifiably a Loki costume without ever looking much like anything Loki actor Tom Hiddleston ever wore. Looper spoke with "Loki" costume designer Christine Wada, who broke down some of the details of her outfits.
"Working as a team," said Wada, "you're always wanting everybody to do their work as successfully as possible. And that's not just the actors, that's everybody involved. You want everybody to be able to bring the most that they can to the table in terms of what they do." Comfort is obviously paramount, and how to balance that with looking good on screen is the task of a good costume designer. We also had to ask about a particular detail, one of the first things we notice about Sylvie.
Sylvie lived a "Mad Max" style life
The most striking aspect of Slyvie's costume is the broken horn. Loki is occasionally seen wearing a crown yet, no matter how many ragdoll beatings from the Hulk he takes, his outfit is always in impeccable repair. Not Sylvie; she has spent her whole existence fighting and the broken horn on her headband is the most visible representation of that.
As such, we had to ask Wada the meaning behind it. She told us that the broken horn is "just trying to give her a history of feeling that she was this Mad Max, basically a warrior out there and just with the battle scars and the wounds of jumping through time and fighting this fight. You just wanted to feel that she has been fighting her way through these timelines." A Mad Max style life indeed, complete with wastelands.
All six episodes of "Loki" Season 1 are available to stream on Disney+.
