Here's Where You Can Watch Every Movie In The Pitch Perfect Trilogy
The "Pitch Perfect" trilogy is an outlier. During a time when theatrically released comedies entered a period of severe box office decline from which Vulture suspects they may not ever emerge, the first "Pitch Perfect" movie unexpectedly made over $115 million worldwide against a $17 million budget, according to Box Office Mojo. It succeeded due to the chemistry between and performances of its ensemble cast, especially star Anna Kendrick and breakout player Rebel Wilson.
The fact that it felt fresh because it's a rare female-fronted studio comedy that isn't primarily about trying to get a boyfriend (as pointed out by the BBC), and the enduring, always somewhat surprising appeal of hearing familiar pop songs in different arrangements — a cappella, in this case — certainly didn't hurt. The movie got highly positive reviews and spun off a hit single with a life of its own, Anna Kendrick's "Cups," which reached No. 1 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary chart and was ubiquitous in 2013.
"Pitch Perfect" was followed by two sequels, "Pitch Perfect 2" in 2015 and "Pitch Perfect 3" in 2017. All three movies are available to stream or rent. Here's where you can find them.
Where to watch Pitch Perfect
The original "Pitch Perfect" follows Barden University's women's a cappella group the Barden Bellas as they try to redeem themselves after a humiliating loss to the men's group, the Barden Treblemakers, at the previous year's national collegiate a cappella championship.
The group's leaders, seniors Aubrey Posen (Anna Camp) and Chloe Beale (Brittany Snow), recruit freshman Beca Mitchell (Anna Kendrick) to join. The iconoclastic and rebellious Beca has fresh ideas about the kind of songs the group should be singing, but the uptight Aubrey wants to stick to what has worked before, even if it's stale and boring. Eventually, they learn how to work together and bring the house down with their melding of the classic and the new. And Rebel Wilson steals every scene she's in as the outrageous Barden Bella "Fat Amy" Hobart.
The film is available to stream with an HBO Max subscription. It's also available to be rented or bought on Apple, Amazon, or YouTube.
Where to watch Pitch Perfect 2
"Pitch Perfect 2" came out in 2015 and heightened everything from the original "Pitch Perfect." Elizabeth Banks – who produced and had a hilarious supporting role as snide a capella competition commentator Gail Abernathy-McKadden-Feinberger in the first movie — took over as director, in addition to reprising her roles from the first movie. The sequel had a bigger budget — $29 million compared to the original's $17 million — and grossed over $287 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo.
It took a page out of the playbook of "D2: The Mighty Ducks" and sent the Barden Bellas to an international competition. It's set three years after the first movie, and Beca is now the leader of the Bellas along with Chloe, who has intentionally failed three years in a row in order to stay in college and with the group. They've won the national a cappella title three years in a row, but have been expelled from the ICCA due to Amy accidentally flashing President Barack Obama during a performance at the Kennedy Center. But if Beca can lead them to a title at the world a cappella championship, the Bellas will be reinstated.
"Pitch Perfect 2" is not available on any of the major subscription streaming platforms, but it can be streamed on demand if you have DirecTV, Spectrum, or Fubo. It's also available for rental or purchase on Apple, Amazon, or YouTube.
Where to watch Pitch Perfect 3
"Pitch Perfect 3" was released in 2017. It wasn't as financially successful as "Pitch Perfect 2," grossing $185 million worldwide against a budget of $45 million, according to Box Office Mojo, or as critically successful as the original "Pitch Perfect," only managing a 29% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
"Pitch Perfect 3" is set another three years after "Pitch Perfect 2," with Beca, Amy, and Chloe all graduated and Emily Junk (Hailee Steinfeld) running the Barden Bellas now. The alumni reunite for a USO tour, which takes them on a journey across the world entertaining American troops. There's also a kidnapping plot and an unexpectedly large supporting role for DJ Khaled as himself.
"Pitch Perfect 3" is unfortunately not currently available on any major subscription streaming services like Netflix or HBO Max, but it is available on Fubo, DirecTV, or Spectrum. It's available to rent or buy on Apple, Amazon, or YouTube.
