Check Out A Dizzying New Clip From Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings
There's only weeks to go until "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings" finally arrives in theaters after numerous delays thanks to the ongoing pandemic. Simu Liu stars as Shang-Chi, a young man who has to deal with his difficult past when he's pulled back into the world of the Ten Rings, a terrorist organization run by his father Wenwu aka The Mandarin (Tony Leung).
The film has been shrouded in mystery for the last few years, largely because Shang-Chi himself isn't as well-known as, say, Iron Man or The Incredible Hulk. That's definitely going to change now that Marvel Studios is finally putting the legendary martial artist into the spotlight. Now that the Marvel marketing machine is in full swing ahead of the film's release, fans have been treated to various trailers and clips which show off what to expect from Shang-Chi's fight against the Mandarin when the adventure debuts exclusively in theaters on September 3.
The previous "Shang-Chi" trailer saw Wong (Benedict Wong) fighting Abomination — who previously appeared in 2008's "The Incredible Hulk," so it'll be interesting to see how else it crosses over with the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But the latest "Shang-Chi" clip shows off the Mandarin's forces attacking Shang-Chi, and it gives audiences a taste of the ambitious fight scenes in the film.
A bamboo battle
The new clip shows Shang-Chi and Katy (Awkwafina) escaping out of a skyscraper onto bamboo scaffolding set up on the outside of the building. Hopefully the skilled fighter isn't afraid of heights. The duo is being chased by a number of assassins who are all armed with various axes, staffs, and electric batons, which isn't exactly ideal when they're fighting on the outside of a towering building with no safety harness ... Gulp. It's great to see Simu Liu's impressive stunt-work in the 55-second-long clip, and this is probably just one of many fight scenes he has in the film.
It's not clear how far into the film this new clip takes place, but it's clearly after the hero's past has come back to haunt him. But the scene is also a clear reference to Jackie Chan's work in "Rush Hour 2," which features a bamboo scaffolding fight on the outside of a building and "Project A," where Chan fights on a bamboo stage. Simu Liu previously told Entertainment Weekly that he trained extensively for the role since he had minimal martial arts experience when he joined the film, "I want to sit here and tell you that I was pretty good at martial arts before ... I had maybe worked a few days as a stuntman in Toronto. But really, my martial arts experience was like backflipping in my backyard when I was a teenager and doing parkour with my friends."
The training definitely paid off, because Liu's stunt work in this scene is viciously entertaining — and clearly there's more to come when "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings" arrives on September 3, 2021.
