The Yellowstone Prequel Series 1883 Finally Gets A Premiere Date
"Yellowstone" Season 4 is almost here. The next season of the hit modern Western series starring Kevin Costner is set to premiere on the Paramount Network on Sunday, November 7 (per TVLine). Just in case that wasn't exciting enough, the show's first spinoff — a prequel series titled "1883" — is set to premiere shortly after it. Both series' premiere dates were announced Thursday, along with the premiere date for "Mayor of Kingstown," another upcoming drama series from "Yellowstone" creator Taylor Sheridan.
"1883" tells the story of the founding of the Yellowstone Ranch by the ancestors of Costner's John Dutton. The series follows members of the Dutton family as they set out west across the Great Plains in the hope of creating a better life for themselves in Montana. It has been described as a "stark retelling of Western expansion and an intense study of one family fleeing poverty to seek a better future in America's promised land" (via Esquire).
The series, which promises to expand and explore the existing "Yellowstone" story in some interesting and unexpected ways, is officially coming to the ViacomCBS-owned streaming service Paramount+ this winter.
Here's the official premiere date for the upcoming Yellowstone prequel
"1883" will launch on Paramount+ Sunday, December 19 (via TVLine). Paramount Network will also reportedly air a special simulcast of "1883" following "Yellowstone" that night to help promote the spinoff, which ViacomCBS hopes will help bring more users to Paramount+ (via Deadline). The streaming platform will be the exclusive home for "1883" after the premiere event.
"1883" stars Sam Elliott as Shea Brennan, a veteran cowboy who is leading the Dutton party from Texas to Montana, and is said to be a tough guy with a tragic past. Meanwhile, real-life husband-and-wife country singers Tim McGraw and Faith Hill play James and Margaret Dutton, the family patriarch and matriarch, in the series. Additional cast members will be announced at a later date, and no pieces of footage or images have been released from the show so far.
"Yellowstone" fans seem to overwhelmingly love Elliott's casting in "1883," but are a bit more divided about McGraw and Hill's involvement. There's a perception among some fans that the musicians don't have the acting experience needed to carry the show, but we'll just have to wait and see whether or not that's actually the case when "1883" premieres in December.
Elsewhere, "Mayor of Kingstown," which stars Jeremy Renner as a power broker in a town where the only thriving business is the private prison, premieres Sunday, November 14 on Paramount+. It marks Renner's reunion with Taylor Sheridan, following their collaboration together on the 2017 thriller, "Wind River."
