Zombieland 2 Has A Script
It looks like Zombieland might be getting a double tap after all.
A sequel to the 2009 horror-comedy hit has been discussed for years, but it's always seemed like a fairly long shot—after all, pretty much every main player in the cast has gone on to far bigger and better things since the original slayed in theaters, which would make it virtually impossible to replicate its low-budget charm (and/or arrange funding). But screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, currently flush with Hollywood capital after writing Deadpool, are still into the idea; in fact, as they recently told ComicBook, they've finally gotten around to coming up with an actual script.
"All of our cast have read the script and love it," said Wernick, who noted that Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer is also on board. "It's just a matter of making our cast deals and making it for a budget number. All the cast have become superstars now so, we made Zombieland with 20 million, so it's trying to fit that financial model into the sequel model so it makes sense for the studio and being able to pay the actors what they now get paid and deserve to paid."
All of which is far easier said than done, especially given that they're trying to reunite a cast that includes Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, and Abigail Breslin. But Reese and Wernick insist the project's in "active development" at Sony, where they've pestered chief exec Tom Rothman to the point that he's told them he no longer wants to hear about it, and they vow they're "not letting go." Where there's a will there's a way, especially in Hollywood, and if the sequel's stars "love it" enough to take pay cuts and get those cameras rolling, we just might get Zombieland 2 after all—preferably with another suitably silly celebrity cameo.
