Shotgun Wedding - What We Know So Far
In the early 2000s, Jennifer Lopez became the unofficial queen of romantic comedies. She had a slew of hits over the course of a few years that tugged at your heartstrings and made you laugh in your seat. To this day, the likes of "The Wedding Planner," "Maid in Manhattan," and "Monster-in-Law" remain classics in the genre that audiences continue to enjoy. The 2010s saw her focus less on movie roles, but she's getting back into the swing of things as of late with prominent roles in "Second Act" and "Hustlers."
Now, Lopez will return to her bread and butter with a role in the upcoming rom-com "Shotgun Wedding." She'll star in the primary couple alongside Josh Duhamel, who's no stranger to the rom-com himself with parts in "Win a Date with Tad Hamilton!" and "New Year's Eve." The two will make an undoubtedly attractive couple, but what else can we expect from the film? Here's what we know so far for "Shotgun Wedding."
What's the release date for Shotgun Wedding?
Many people associate the summer movie season with major blockbusters. Their first thoughts turn toward franchise films within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the "Fast & Furious" series, and other action movies of that ilk. It's a time when people want to cram into cineplexes to see larger-than-life action stars perform unimaginable feats on the biggest screen possible. However, studios have recognized that offering counter-programming is vital for people who don't necessarily care for action.
That's where "Shotgun Wedding" comes into play. The film from Lionsgate will debut in the summer of 2022, specifically on June 29, 2022 (via Variety). The movie shouldn't have any issues meeting that release date, seeing how star Jennifer Lopez posted that filming has officially wrapped on her Instagram page. The caption comes alongside a photo of her posing with Josh Duhamel and Lenny Kravitz, who apparently also has some kind of role within the rom-com.
Who's in the cast for Shotgun Wedding?
Lopez and Duhamel lead the flick, but they have plenty of backup support from an exceptionally talented comedic cast. The report from Variety indicates they'll be joined by Jennifer Coolidge ("American Pie") and Cheech Marin ("Machete"). The article doesn't mention whom they'll play, but one would assume actors of their caliber would have substantial roles to showcase their talents.
Another intriguing addition to the cast that's bound to delight fans of "The Good Place" is D'Arcy Carden. She played Janet on the spiritual sitcom, and when Lopez posted about the film wrapping production on her Instagram, she tagged Carden in the post. Another addition we can glean from Lopez's wrap photo is Brazilian actress Sônia Braga.
Jason Moore ("Pitch Perfect," "Sisters") directs the movie, which comes from a script written by Elizabeth Meriwether ("New Girl," "Bless This Mess") and Mark Hammer ("Two Night Stand"). With this kind of comedic pedigree, "Shotgun Wedding" is bound to be a laugh a minute.
What's the plot of Shotgun Wedding?
The term "shotgun wedding" refers to a marriage ceremony that was put together quickly, typically because the bride was pregnant. The idea is that the groom is held at gunpoint to do the right thing and marry the woman he knocked up. However, the phrase takes on a drastically different meaning for the upcoming film.
There's no word if Lopez's character will be pregnant for the film, but there will certainly be plenty of guns, as one can surmise from the following plot description from Variety. "Darcy (Lopez) and Tom (Duhamel) gather their families for a destination wedding," the report starts. "But as the couple begins to get cold feet, the entire wedding party is taken hostage, giving a new meaning to the phrase 'til death do us part.'"
It sounds like the film will combine both rom-com and action elements for a one-of-a-kind adventure, and unless things change, you can check it out once it drops on June 29, 2022.
