The Slime Diaries Season 2 - What We Know So Far
One of the most unique takes on the growing isekai genre of anime has to be the series "That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime." Playing on the isekai-standard concepts of reincarnation and video game-esque fantasy magic, the series follows a man who is reincarnated as a low-level slime monster at the end of a dungeon. Luckily for Rimuru, the slime, they make quick friends with an extremely powerful dragon that serves as the dungeon's boss. The dragon shares his powers with Rimuru, making them an exceptionally powerful opponent from day one. The rest of the series tracks the slime's adventures as they become more powerful, build their own city of monsters, and make their mark on this new fantasy world.
In the midst of all this, however, Rimuru still finds time for more mundane activities. Thus, the lovable blue blob received a spinoff series called "The Slime Diaries," based on the spinoff manga of the same name. The first season of this slice of life series was released only recently, yet fans are already wondering if it will receive a second season. Though prospects for a continuation are still up in the air, the franchise's popularity gives the spinoff a decent shot at a Season 2. Here is what we know so far about "The Slime Diaries" Season 2's release date, cast, and plot.
What is the release date of The Slime Diaries Season 2?
At the moment, the animation studio behind the "Slime" franchise, Eight Bit, has not announced whether "The Slime Diaries" is even receiving a second season. As a result, it's impossible to determine when exactly Season 2 will come out. In the likely scenario that it does return for Season 2, the series' past production timeline gives us a window into how long the wait might be.
According to Funimation, "The Slime Diaries" was announced in March 2020, with the series initially being planned for release in January 2021. However, COVID-19 delays got in the way of its release, as well as the release of "That Time I got Reincarnated as a Slime" Season 2. As a result, Season 1 of "The Slime Diaries" did not premiere until April 2021 (via Anime News Network). This means that when Eight Bit does announce "The Slime Diaries" Season 2, it should only take a year or so before it comes out.
The only issue is that the "Slime" franchise already has a lot on its plate. The franchise currently has a movie being released in fall 2022 (via ANN), meaning that Eight Bit may not focus on any other "Slime"-related projects until afterwards. As such, fans could see a new entry in "The Slime Diaries" series as early as 2023. But if Eight Bit decides to first create a third season of the core "Slime" series, then fans are looking towards 2024 and beyond.
Who are the characters in The Slime Diaries Season 2?
Since "The Slime Diaries" is a simple slice of life spinoff of the original "That Time I got Reincarnated as a Slime," its core cast remains pretty much the same. The starring role is still occupied by the bouncy blue blob, Rimuru (Miho Okasaki/Brittany Karbowski).
Likewise, many of the show's longstanding supporting roles will stay the same. In this case, that refers to almost all of the monsters that Rimuru has given names to while in the fantasy world, such as Gobuta the hobgoblin (Asuna Tomari/Ryan Reynolds) (via Myanimelist). Other familiar faces include Benimaru the Kijin (Makoto Furukawa/Ricco Fajardo), Shion (Mao Ichimichi/Michelle Rojas), and Shuna (Sayaka Sengbongi/Tia Ballard).
In reality, this only scratches the surface of the characters you meet in "The Slime Diaries." As Rimuru states in the first episode, there are over 10,000 monsters in their city, with each being another potential character in the ever-expanding world of the "Slime" franchise.
What is the plot of The Slime Diaries Season 2?
"The Slime Diaries" serves as a relaxing departure from the exciting adventures of "That Time I got Reincarnated as a Slime." So, instead of fighting monsters and becoming more powerful, Rimuru and friends dedicate themselves to more mundane things. Managing the city, throwing seasonal festivals, and celebrating Christmas are just a few of the challenges that await Rimuru in this series.
Knowing this, we can infer that "The Slime Diaries" Season 2 will be much the same. There's less action, but decidedly more lighthearted fun and whimsical mundanity. It might not be the most exciting sounding adventures, but like all slice of life stories, there's a simple joy that comes from seeing others' day-to-day activities. Unfortunately, it may be a while before Rimuru takes another break from adventuring for a more relaxing look into the fantasy world of the "Slime" franchise.
