Anakin's Lightsaber Belongs To Rey In 'The Last Jedi'
There's still a lot Star Wars fans don't know about Rey, but a clue to her future in the franchise may have been tipped by the folks at Lucasfilm.
The intriguing details in question come courtesy of Star Wars story group member Pablo Hidalgo, who's quoted in a recent episode of the Star Wars Show—conducted during Vanity Fair's exclusive peek behind the scenes of the upcoming eighth installment in the saga, Star Wars: The Last Jedi—as saying studio execs now see Anakin Skywalker's old lightsaber as belonging to Rey.
"The blade is no longer considered Anakin's lightsaber by the Lucasfilm marketing department," said Hidalgo. "It has now been officially dubbed 'Rey's.'"
The weapon, last seen in action in the closing moments of The Force Awakens during Rey and Finn's climactic battle against Kylo Ren, has a storied history in the Star Wars saga. First owned by Anakin, it was taken by Obi-Wan after the two battled; years after Anakin became Darth Vader, the saber was handed down to Luke by Obi-Wan Kenobi—then lost by Luke during his battle against Vader on Bespin. It was stored in Maz Kanata's place on Takodana, presumably for years, before calling out to Rey...who insisted on bringing it to Luke on Ach-To, where the two share a wordless greeting in The Force Awakens' final scene.
There's a lot of history here, needless to say, and while we still have no idea where Rey came from or what her future holds, we do see her training with the saber in the trailer for The Last Jedi, and Hidalgo's remarks suggest she won't be wielding it temporarily. As for the details, we'll just have to wait until The Last Jedi arrives on Dec. 15; in the meantime, have a look at our reasons for believing it'll blow you away.
