Spider-Man: No Way Home Finally Confirms What Happened To Nick Fury
Contains spoilers for "Spider-Man: No Way Home"
There's undeniably a tangled web being woven in "Spider-Man: No Way Home," which has finally been unraveled thanks to its eagerly anticipated arrival. We finally know who is involved, when it takes place, and insight into the unthinkable ramifications it will have on the MCU. And yet, even with all those intricacies involved, Jon Watts' third outing with the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man still finds time to name drop one character in particular that we've not seen since Spidey's last outing.
We're referring, of course, to former SHIELD director Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson). Last seen being stood in for by his Skrull acquaintance Talos in "Spider-Man: Far From Home," we saw in the film's post-credits scene that Fury was hanging out aboard a starship in an undisclosed location section of space. Since then, just what has the man with an eye on everything been up to? It's left to law enforcement to clear things up.
Peter gets some shocking news about Nick Fury
With his identity out in the open, Peter is dragged into custody for seemingly killing earth's savior and total sham, Mysterio, in London. While being questioned by the Department of Damage Control, Peter struggles to be heard, resorting to pulling out a SHIELD-shaped card for his defense. He tells Agent Cleary ("Succession's" Arian Moayed) to call Nick Fury to back up his story, but Cleary reveals that "Nick Fury's been off-world for a year" leaving Parker very confused.
The web-slinger is, of course, completely unaware that during the events of "Far From Home," he was talking to an alien double when he assumed he was taking orders from Nick Fury. It also makes perfect sense that Fury is still there now, given that the film and this one are set only a week apart.
While we don't have a specific lock on Fury following these events, we can expect to learn more about Fury's ongoing adventures in the upcoming Disney+ show, "Secret Invasion." Inspired by the Marvel story-arc of the same name, the show will arrive on the streaming service in 2022, and should hopefully reveal what Fury has been up to for the past year. We've certainly missed him.
