The Sex And The City Character You Are Based On Your Zodiac Sign
"Sex and the City" is back on our small screens with its reboot, "And Just Like That," although considering how influential the original series was, we wonder if it ever really left. Michael Patrick King's "Sex and the City" follows Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker), a thirty-something sex columnist living, laughing, and loving in New York City. Carrie's crew, Miranda (Cynthia Nixon), Samantha (Kim Cattrall), and Charlotte (Kristin Davis), all have their own adventures, and the fabulous foursome goes through the trials and tribulations of love and friendship.
"Sex and the City" ushered in the modern wave of prestige television as the series was real, raunchy, and put HBO on the map as the network that pushed the envelope. "Sex and the City" came out a year before "The Sopranos," and one could argue that Carrie is HBO's original anti-hero before Tony Soprano. The success of "Sex and the City" can be attributed to many things — glamor, sex, the empowerment of female sexuality — but it comes down to the chemistry of the cast.
For its six-season run, the only question that mattered to many was, "are you a Carrie, Samantha, Miranda, or Charlotte?" These characters work because they're so different from each other in part because the series incorporates characters representing all signs of the zodiac. Read on to find out which character from "Sex and the City" (the original series, only) you are based on your astrological sign.
Aries: Mr. Big (March 20—April 19)
The tried-and-true sitcom formula demands a will-they-or-won't-they couple, and in the world of "Sex and the City," Mr. Big (Chris Noth) is Carrie's biggest love-slash-question mark. Only a few Zodiac signs would thrive in the type of chaos of an on-and-off-again relationship that defines Carrie and Big, and Aries is at the top of that list. Aries is the youngest sign of the Zodiac and is named after the Roman god of war, Ares, so not surprisingly, it's characterized by an affinity for chaos, passion, and impulsiveness.
Mr. Big is a man who does what he wants, when he wants, and how he wants. It's a double-edged sword as this attracts Carrie but hurts her as well, which can be the case with Aries folks as they often want to pursue their desires and goals — everything else be damned. Aries can be charismatic and goal-oriented, which Mr. Big certainly is (he can convince you into anything with a single eyebrow raise). But being the youngest of the Zodiac can translate into some childish impetuousness, and Mr. Big struggles with maturity. He's terrified of commitment and the feeling of his freedom or independence being threatened by love, so he keeps Carrie at arm's length to avoid vulnerability. It only lasts for so long, though, because when an Aries loves, they love hard, and when Mr. Big finally lets himself love Carrie, it's for the long haul.
Taurus: Harry Goldenblatt (April 20—May 20)
Taurus is the bull of the Zodiac, which can charge into your life whether you're ready for it or not, and no one better embodies this than Harry (Evan Handler), a self-described "bull in a china shop." Tauruses are characterized by a love of pleasure and sensuality, as well as an often unshakable stability that can be freeing or restricting (depending on who you ask). Harry is a man who knows himself and will not deviate from that: he's rigid with his value system, but he's sometimes willing to bend for love (i.e., getting his back waxed for Charlotte).
Tauruses are ruled by Venus, the planet of pleasure and love, and while some of Harry's body is criticized by Charlotte, it's actually his comfort in himself that reads as Taurean. Harry loves sitting around the house naked and eating pizza in bed, all of which are very typical for a Taurus. He's loyal and will do anything for the ones he loves, but the flip side of all of this is the characteristic stubbornness of the bull. Harry knows that he can't marry a non-Jewish woman, and yet he charges into Charlotte's life and gets into a deep relationship with her before he tells her this non-negotiable rule. It's very much like a Taurus to rush towards love, pleasure, and romance and then think of the consequences later (sure, it works out with him and Charlotte, but still).
Gemini: Carrie Bradshaw (May 21—June 20)
While "Sex and the City" wouldn't be what it is without Carrie's friends, the show revolves around the words and musings of Gemini Carrie. Geminis are ruled by Mercury, the planet of communication, so it's no surprise that Carrie feels safest and most powerful in a verbal space. Who else could be a queen of puns besides a Gemini? And who else but a wordy Gemini would be so offended by a seven-word breakup on a post-it note (okay, everyone would). Geminis are charming and fun (the life of the party, who'll smoke a doobie once in a while), and Carrie is certainly these things, which is part of the reason her character works.
Geminis are the twins of the Zodiac, who can experience conflicting desires, needs, and characteristics, all at once. It's less that they're two-faced and more that they change their minds a lot or run through a gamut of emotions about a situation much quicker than someone else. Look at Carrie's relationship with Big: she loves him, she hates him, and it goes back and forth in a very Gemini way (and her need to process it is also very true to a Gemini). With a Gemini, you never know which part of them you'll meet or how quickly they'll shift to something else. Geminis can be easily stimulated (or have short attention spans), which works for Carrie professionally as she's able to find and work through ideas for her column constantly.
Cancer: Aidan Shaw (June 21—July 22)
In the world of "Sex and the City," Aidan (John Corbett) is a bit of an anomaly. Whereas the other characters are usually found at the hottest clubs, bars, and restaurants of New York City (for many, the discovery of NYC hot spots was a draw of the show), Aidan is usually at home with his hand deep in a bucket of fried chicken. So, astrologically, there's really only one sign for him: Cancer. Cancers are the crabs of the Zodiac and often feel safest in the comfort of their own home or anywhere that makes them feel protected.
It's no surprise that Aidan is a furniture-maker; who else but a Cancer would devote their lives to creating beautiful furniture to enhance others' homes? Cancers are often sensitive, but like the crab, they have their sharp edges; if they let you in and you hurt them, you'll meet the snap of their pincers. Carrie discovers this first hand when she breaks Aidan's heart by cheating on him with (married) Mr. Big and tries to get him back; Aidan is skeptical and withdrawn but eventually lets her in again because he's kind and gentle — all Cancer qualities — but sadly, Carrie winds up being Aidan's Mr. Big. The back-and-forth attitude of a Gemini like Carrie only brings pain to the Cancer, Aidan, who's seeking stability and comfort, which isn't Carrie's desire and that's okay! It's just not a good match.
Leo: Samantha Jones (July 23—August 22)
It's hard to imagine "Sex and the City" without Samantha (Kim Cattrall) and unfortunately, Michael Patrick King is forcing us to do just that with the reboot, "And Just like That." Samantha puts the "sex" in "Sex and the City" and for many, she's the shining star of the whole series, so it's only natural that she's the Leo of the group. Leos are ruled by the sun because they basically are the sun (in their minds) and this is certainly the case for Samantha, a woman whose confidence has inspired generations of audiences to put on fake nipples and find their powerful Samantha inside.
Leos are often the center of attention and draw people in with their charisma and charm. Sometimes, they can get blinded by their own sense of self, which can read as self-centeredness and with Samantha, this comes through in some of her intimacy issues and avoidance. The symbol of Leos is the lion and Samantha is certainly the lioness of her friends. She loves herself first and foremost but her friends are a close second (or even tied) and Samantha's fierceness, loyalty and non-judgmental nature are unmatched.
Virgo: Charlotte York (August 23—September 22)
In the world of "Sex and the City," the characters are on a journey for happiness that meanders and changes over time but there's one person who stays true to her childhood fantasies: Charlotte (Kristin Davis), the romantic Virgo. While Carrie, Samantha, and Miranda throw themselves headfirst into wild sexual situations, Charlotte seeks out love and romance with a singular minded focus that is a Virgo characteristic.
Virgos are often analytical, perfectionists, and critical: of others, the world outside, and, most of all, themselves. It's not surprising that Charlotte makes a career in the art world, where she can use that Virgo trait of analysis to interpret and critique art. Charlotte judges her friends' behaviors – particularly Samantha's — which is a trait of Virgos, who can be so precise and logical that they believe they know the best (and only) way to do things. This level of being in one's head can lead to repression, which Charlotte experiences, but there are some times when she lets her inner freak flag fly, much to the delight of her friends.
Charlotte struggles to bridge the gap between her fantasy — marry conservative and rich — and reality. She does that with Trey, only to discover that she needs more than a man who checks off her boxes. Charlotte does finally disconnect from the idea of herself and her life long enough to fall in love with Harry, who is nothing like the person she dreamed of.
Libra: Trey Macdougal (September 23—October 22)
The women of "Sex and the City" wind up with their dream men, who look much different in reality than in their fantasies, and Charlotte thinks she's met hers in Trey (Kyle MacLachlan), the Libra. Trey seemingly has it all: he's rich, handsome, and conservative. But he's also a Libra, so he struggles with indecision and people-pleasing, which comes to a head when he's caught between the two people he wants to please most: Charlotte and his mother, Bunny (Frances Sternhagen).
Libras are the scales of the Zodiac, which translates into a desire to keep the balance. This can mean being sociable, affable, and capable of navigating a variety of situations with ease and grace. The flip side of that is putting others ahead of oneself in an attempt to people please and this is certainly the case with Trey, who listens to his mother before listening to himself. The arrival of Charlotte makes Trey's brain short circuit as he doesn't know who to prioritize: his mother or his wife (it's a trick question, he needs to prioritize himself).
Libras are also ruled by Venus, the planet of beauty and pleasure, but sadly, this Libra seems to have little connection to his home planet as his house is filled with decorative mallards and he and Charlotte struggle to experience pleasure together (although we love her Virgo solution to that: replacing the faces of women in his porn magazine with her own).
Scorpio: Richard Wright (October 23—November 21)
Samantha doesn't really "do" relationships as she's someone who doesn't want to feel caged in, but she meets her match with Richard Wright (James Remar), a successful hotel magnate who sparks a fire inside of Samantha. For the Leo queen, there's only one sign who could excite her in this way: Scorpio. Scorpios, like their scorpion symbol, are the mysterious, dark, thrilling and kind of scary signs of the Zodiac. They're often passionate and sexual, which is what Samantha gets from Richard.
Scorpios can be ambitious and determined, which makes sense as Richard is powerful in his profession. He taps into that Scorpio mystery and secrecy to create a sense of allure that drives people wild. It's no wonder he's at least superficially Samantha's male match; he's had as many flings as she has and has a similarly casual and avoidant approach to sex and love. Scorpios can struggle to let themselves be seen or vulnerable, and this is what drives Samantha and Richard apart in the end as she realizes that she does desire that vulnerability, which he can't offer.
Sagittarius: Smith Jerrod (November 22—December 21)
While it's hard to think of Samantha ever fantasizing about her "dream partner," one can still see the surprise of her finding that in the Sagittarius, Smith (Jason Lewis), a twenty-something actor who sees past Samantha's tightly-fastened mask. Sagittarius is the archer of the Zodiac, marked by a tendency to shoot the truth like an arrow straight into one's heart. Sagittarius can often see things that others can't and will tell it like it is; Smith does this with Samantha, as he cuts through her antics to offer her intimacy (and hand-holding, gasp).
The Sagittarius is curious and an adventure seeker, so it checks out that Smith would pursue acting as it's a path that takes him around the world and into all different spaces of life. Smith says yes to everything — even Samantha acting out by cheating on him with Richard. It's not that he condones her actions but more that he uses his Sagittarius lens to see past her behavior for what it is: a need to grasp at an old power and sense of self that no longer rings true.
Capricorn: Miranda Hobbes (December 22—January 19)
Rounding out the fab four is the cynical Capricorn, Miranda. Capricorns are the bosses of the Zodiac, who thrive on results. Miranda's pragmatic approach extends to both her personal and professional spheres, as she sets her sights on making partner at her law firm (which she does). Capricorns can be no nonsense and goal-oriented; they know what they want and nothing will stop them.
While this works for Miranda professionally, she struggles with some of her Capricorn tendencies romantically. Miranda is so certain both about herself and the world itself that it comes off as cynical and there are hardly any men who meet her high standards. Several of them fall under her Capricorn style questioning or rules and it's not until Steve that she starts to soften a bit (it's a slow and long process). It can be difficult for a Capricorn to let someone in or to try things differently but when they're willing to step outside of their comfort zones, Capricorns can find surprises and delights (like attraction to sandwiches, for example).
Like a true Capricorn, Miranda is reliable, keeps it real, and calls her friends out on their antics, even when they really don't want to hear it (looking at you, Carrie, and your decision to move to Paris). In Capricorn fashion, she can communicate harshly as she believes she knows best and doesn't soften that but ultimately, she's a great friend.
Aquarius: Stanford Blatch (January 20–February 18)
The original "Sex and the City" suffers from a diversity problem (or rather, near total absence of it) but luckily, fans are blessed with at least one significant gay character: Stanford (Willie Garson). Stanford is the Aquarius of the gang, who's Carrie's best gal pal outside of her other gal pals. He's her confidante when she doesn't get what she needs from the others and can always be counted on giving her an unexpected outside perspective (like don't get one therapist; get three, including a hot one that you can talk to the other two about).
This is all typical for an Aquarius, who doesn't see the world as others see it. Aquarians are represented by the water-bearer: they're free spirits and free thinkers, people who think about the big questions in life. They often exist outside of the system, so while Stanford is a talent agent, he only has one client because that's what his Aquarius vision sees, okay? The Aquarian need for independence can sometimes make it difficult to be in relationships or invite others in, so Stanford isn't always successful in finding intimacy (a bed of dolls is too much, even for this Aquarius). It's not surprising that Aquarians thrive with surprising life choices, so Stanford's decision to be with his once arch-nemesis, Anthony (Mario Cantone), is exactly what we'd expect of this wonderful, weird, water-bearer.
Pisces: Steve Brady (February 19—March 20)
All the characters of "Sex and the City" struggle with expressing their sensitivity and vulnerability in different ways, but Pisces Steve (David Eigenberg) seems to have no issue with that. Pisces is the oldest sign of the Zodiac, represented by the fish, and it's characterized by a sensitivity and intuition that often comes with wisdom and a deep knowledge. It's arguably the witchiest of the signs and Steve the bartender is nothing if not an intuitive witch.
When Steve first meets Miranda, it's seemingly just a one-night stand: he's a cute bartender and she doesn't expect to see him again. But this Pisces knows better and perhaps it's through his third eye that he sees a future with this woman, who's trying to write him off. Steve gets to put his Pisces skills to use as a bartender, which is as much about reading others as it is serving them drinks. Pisces can be prone to fantasy (it's a double-edged sword), so Steve starts dreaming of making a half-court shot and also owning his own bar. The ever-practical Capricorn Miranda tries to rein in some of these dreams but soon learns that when it comes to a Pisces and their fantasies, you just have to let them run with them.
