The Hunger Games District You Belong To Based On Your Zodiac Sign
When "The Hunger Games," a bestselling dystopian book series by author Suzanne Collins, was adapted for the big screen, it launched Jennifer Lawrence into stratospheric super-stardom. The fictional world of Panem, where an authoritarian regime is built upon the ruins of the United States, has captivated viewers and readers alike.
Resembling Ancient Rome, the Capital of Panem is a city of excess while the other districts, toil and starve, sending their children to their death in the Capitol. After a failed rebellion, each year, one boy and girl, aged 11-18, are chosen to represent their district in The Hunger Games. It's a brutal game set in an elaborate arena, where 24 children fight to the death in remembrance of the failed rebellion, entertain the Capitol, and remind the masses of the price of rebellion.
Our story begins in District 12, 74 years after this unsuccessful rebellion, on the day the "tributes" are selected. When Katniss' younger sister Prue's name is drawn, Katniss volunteers in her place, making Katniss District 12's first volunteer. We watch Katniss fight for survival throughout the book and film series, becoming a victor and the inspirational figurehead of a new rebellion. While some districts are wealthy, others are poor, but they all make a specific contribution to Panem. From each district's industry and the characters we meet, the personality of these districts emerge. With Panem's similarity to Ancient Rome, every district in "The Hunger Games" has a distinct personality associated with a zodiac sign and the Greco-Roman myths linked to western astrology and the constellations in our sky. Are you curious which district you would hail from if you lived in Panem? May the odds be ever in your favor!
Aries: District 13 (March 21—April 19)
Aries is a cardinal fire sign ruled by Mars. If you remember your Greco-Roman mythology Mars was the god of war. Before the first rebellion, District 13 contributed to Panem through weapons and military. It was the base of the military industrial complex and rumored to be demolished during the first rebellion. In "The Hunger Games" District 13 leads the second rebellion, having a vast arsenal to assist rebel forces. The link between District 13 and Aries is indisputable. As a cardinal sign, Aries is assertive, filled with energy, initiative and drive, all traits necessary to start a rebellion. As Co—Star says, Aries is direct, brutally honest and unafraid of conflict.
The living conditions in District 13 resemble those of, unsurprisingly, a military base. Residents dress alike and follow strict rules, being treated as soldiers rather than civilians. President Coin, like Aries, is motivated by her desire to prove herself through shows of strength. Aries are known for their impatience, a trait President Coin exhibits repeatedly regarding Katniss Everdeen. Aries enjoy being in a leadership position, influencing those around them to join Aries' plan. Aries are ambitious, and let's face it, it takes a lot of confidence and ambition to start a rebellion.
Taurus: District 10 (April 20—May 20)
In Panem, District 10 is responsible for raising livestock and providing meat to the Capitol. This district is located in the areas encompassing present day Texas and parts of Northern Mexico. An association with livestock creates an obvious link to Taurus as it is represented by the Bull. Taurus is a fixed earth sign ruled by Venus. At the 75th Hunger Games, also called the third Quarter Quell, they dressed the tributes as cows, playing with their obvious associations with livestock. In the third book and movie "Mockingjay" Katniss meets Dalton, a refugee from District 10 who now lives in District 13. He officiates Annie and Finnick's wedding.
Taureans are known for their down-to-earth vibe. Rooted in the physical world, Taurus doesn't like change and is famous for being insufferably stubborn. The expression bull-headed most certainly sprung from the traits of Taurus. Taurus is reliable, patient, and devoted. Ruled by Venus, Aphrodite in Greek mythology, Taureans are sensual, enjoying physical pleasures like good food and drink. It is unsurprising District 10 doesn't play a huge role in the rebellion or producing victors. A sign associated with the goddess of love isn't a warrior by nature, but they are known for being possessive, and when pushed, they can exhibit a frightening temper.
Gemini: District 6 (May 21—June 21)
In "The Hunger Games" District 6 is associated with transportation. Gemini is a mutable air sign, ruled by Mercury, or Hermes, in Greek mythology. Mercury is the messenger god associated with communication and movement, giving District 6 a natural association with Gemini. As a mutable air sign, Gemini is adaptable, curious and restless. In the 74th Hunger Games, when Katniss volunteers taking her sister Prue's place, both District 6 tributes die in the bloodbath at the start of the games, unsurprising as Geminis are known for being gentle and affectionate.
During the 75th Quarter Quell, Katniss nicknames the District 6 tributes the Morphlings, because of their addiction to the psychoactive substance morphling, an opioid-like drug that seems to be a district wide problem. Like the Morphings, who often opted to paint during their training exercises before the Quarter Quell, Geminis are artistic. In the film "Catching Fire" the tributes resemble each other, looking almost like fraternal twins. The constellation associated with Gemini pertains to the Greek myth of brothers Castor and Pollux, who split their time between the heavens and the Underworld, which seems like a natural association between transportation and travel, linking Gemini to District 6.
Cancer: District 11 (June 22—July 22)
District 11's contribution to Panem is agriculture, and the district is located geographically in the deep South of present day U.S. Cancer is a cardinal water sign ruled by the Moon. Anyone who knows anything about agriculture understands how heavily impacted it is by the seasons and the moon phases. If you open a farmers' almanac, you will see when to plant and harvest crops, and information about the seasonal rhythms of nature, including the moon phases. Cancers are sympathetic, want to help others and avoid conflict, just like Rue, the tribute from District 11, who in the 74th Hunger Games, had an alliance with Katniss.
Cancers are associated with home and family, and they are nurturing and maternal. In Suzanne Collins' novel "The Hunger Games," Katniss connects with Rue in part, because the young girl reminds Katniss of her little sister Prue back home in District 12. In both the books and the films, District 11 is supportive of Katniss and thankful for the dignity she gave to Rue's death in the 74th Hunger Games. It was Rue's death that became a catalyst for rebellion in District 11, reinforcing the importance of family and home within the district. Like all water signs, Cancers are very emotional, but prefer to keep their pain to themselves. But as we all know, everyone has their breaking point and District 11 found theirs in the death of Rue.
Leo: District 1 (July 23—August 22)
In "The Hunger Games" District 1 is known for the luxury goods they manufacture for the Capitol, such as jewelry. You need fire, Leo's element, to work in metal, much like you need emotional fire to produce tributes known as "careers," as District 1 does. The children in District 1 are given names associated with luxury like Cashmere, Glimmer and Gloss, something one would expect from a sign symbolized by the regal Lion. "Career" tributes from District 1 are arrogant and prideful, traits associated with Leo's personality defects. Leo has an abundance of wonderful qualities. They are brave, warm, and loving, but their flaws grow out of having these traits in overabundance.
Leos are brave and confident, as the tributes from District 1 are, but when you have an overabundance of bravery and confidence, it appears as bravado and arrogance. Lions love luxury, as their regal nature suggests, but in the extreme, this becomes greed and selfishness. Let's not be too hard on District 1. Despite their apparent pride and vanity, they prove their bravery by joining the second rebellion after the 74th Hunger Games, showing they had the heart of a Lion all along.
Virgo: District 9 (August 23—September 22)
In the world of "The Hunger Games" we don't know a lot about District 9 — there isn't a single named character in the books or film series from this district. What we know is it is located in the Midwest of North America and is responsible for the grain production for Panem. Like the real Midwest, District 9 is the bread basket of its nation. District 9 is obviously represented by an earth sign, and If you are familiar with the iconography associated with Virgo, you know the maiden is depicted holding a shaft of wheat. Like the Midwest, Virgo is depicted as down-to-earth, hard-working and practical.
Virgo is a mutable earth sign ruled by Mercury, or Hermes, in Greek Mythology, giving Virgo a different vibe than the other earth signs. Virgo is grounded in reality, practical and reliable, but also very analytical and observant, traits associated with Mercury. Virgo has a mutable modality, giving this sign more flexibility than Taurus or Capricorn. Virgos are perfectionists, who hold themselves and others to high standards. They are organized and disciplined. Like the seasons, Virgo is a force of nature who gets the job done. Virgos have a desire to feel useful, like they are serving something outside of themselves, and helping feed a nation falls under the category of public service.
Libra: District 8 (September 22—October 23)
In "The Hunger Games" franchise, District 8 manufactures textiles, including peacekeeper uniforms. While there might be loose associations between textiles and air signs (kites) the personality and traits associated with District 8 largely come from Commander Paylor, who leads the rebellion in the district. Katniss visits a hospital in District 8 after being rescued from the arena of the Quarter Quell by rebel forces. District 8 experiences the worst destruction in the second rebellion, after District 12. They are committed to the rebellion and Commander Paylor is voted president of Panem after the rebellion captures President Snow, and Katniss assassinates President Coin.
Commander Paylor is fair-minded, diplomatic, inspires loyalty by being loyal herself, and hates injustice; traits associated with Libra. Libra is a cardinal air sign. Although Libras typically hate violence, some causes are worth fighting for, and the rebellion is one of them. Libras value, equality, justice and harmony; the values the rebellion is fighting to attain. Libra is ruled by Venus, the goddess of beauty and love. But we should also remember sometimes Venus could be vengeful and wrathful when she was angered. Venus is also associated with victory, a natural association for a district the new President of Panem is from.
Scorpio: District 5 (October 23—November 21)
District 5 handles power production in Panem. In the first film "The Hunger Games" tributes from District 5 are referred to as power plant workers. During the second rebellion, in the third film "Mockingjay Part 1" the residents of District 5 attack the hydroelectric dam with explosives, cutting off power to the Capitol. District 5 is located in the Southwest where New Mexico, Arizona and parts of Nevada are in the U.S. Scorpio is a fixed water sign, symbolized by the Scorpion, which is native to this region. Scorpios are mysterious and intense.
Scorpios are brave, assertive people who are resourceful and nearly fearless, as proven by District 5's devastating attack on the dam. Scorpio's ancient ruler is Mars, the god of war, which seems a fitting representative for a group of dedicated warriors like those of District 5. Scorpio's modern ruler is Pluto (Hades, Greek god of the Underworld) having associations with sex, war, occultism, and destruction. This is probably why Scorpios often get a bad rap in our culture, but death and destruction are a necessary part of the life cycle and intimately tied to transformation; something the rebellion is fighting for in Panem.
Ophiuchus: District 12 (November 29—December 17)
Okay, okay, we know Ophiuchus isn't actually the 13th zodiac sign, but we are also assigning zodiac signs to fictional districts from a dystopian book trilogy and film franchise. Suspend your doubts for a moment and hear what we have to say about the controversial Serpent Bearer and how it relates to District 12, the home of Katniss Everdeen. Since Ophiuchus isn't actually a zodiac sign, but a constellation, it doesn't have a modality, element, or ruling planet. According to Bustle, Ophiuchus falls within the start of Sagittarius' window, sharing traits with both Sagittarius and Scorpio.
Like District 12's most famous inhabitant, Katniss Everdeen, those born under Ophiuchus have a big presence and are passionate (traits common to both Scorpio and Sagittarius). They are opinionated, always speaking their mind. Without a modality, element, or ruling planet, how can we even approach the characteristics of those born under Ophiuchus? If we look at the constellation and its mythology, the Serpent Bearer is associated with Asclepius, the god of medicine and doctors. Asclepius was a healer who could bring people back from the dead. This is why he was banished to the stars by none other than Hades himself.
Those born under Ophiuchus are healers as symbolized by two snakes climbing a staff, like the Mercury carries. This is the symbol for pharmacies in the U.S. and The World Health Organization. Although District 12 is linked with coal, because of their mine, they become increasingly associated with healers, as Katniss' mom and sister Prue embody. If you're not buying into all this Ophiuchus nonsense, don't worry. Sagittarians are also associated with healers and known for carrying a bow.
Sagittarius: District 7 (November 22—December 21)
District 7's contribution to Panem is lumber and paper production. Both substances are fuel for fire, the element of Sagittarius. Remember when the loggers in District 7 bombed the peacekeepers? After the explosion, they quote Katniss, "if we burn, you burn too." Sagittarius is a mutable fire sign that is idealistic, independent, and outdoorsy. Symbolized by the Archer, Sagittarius values freedom just like Johanna the victor from District 7, who was part of the alliance to save Katniss from the arena during the Quarter Quell.
Fiery Sagittarius lacks diplomacy and is honest to the point of rudeness, as we see in Johanna's personality. Ruled by Jupiter, this sign is associated with protection, progress and justice, values the rebellion is fighting for. Sagittarius is linked with the centaurs from Greek mythology, half-man half-horse creatures who lived in the forests of Thessaly and hunted with a bow and arrows, hence the association with the Archer. As one might expect, we made the first bows out of wood, the product of District 7. This district's bold actions during the second rebellion display the fiery personality of Sagittarius.
Capricorn: District 2 (December 22—January 19)
Before the first rebellion, District 2's primary contribution was Masonry. But after the rebellion, the Capitol transferred the military production and the training of the peacekeepers from District 13 to District 2. District 2 was amongst the most staunchly loyal to the Capitol during the second rebellion. District 2 has distinct Capricorn vibes. Capricorn is a cardinal earth sign that loves rules. Symbolized by a horned goat, Capricorn is responsible, disciplined, and motivated by duty. This district produces "career" tributes for The Hunger Games and has a good relationship with the Capitol. Unsurprising from a district that, like Capricorn, values tradition, respects authority, and follows rules.
Ruled by Saturn, Capricorn is all about restrictions, boundaries, and the past. Capricorns are rule followers who often prioritize their work over their families, perhaps explaining why District 2 was one of the last districts to abandon its loyalty to the Capitol. Practical and hardworking, loyal like the other earth signs, Capricorn can be relied upon to get the job done. They like structure and repetition, making residents of District 2 ideally suited for the militaristic peacekeeper forces who are trained and recruited in District 2.
Aquarius: District 3 (January 20–February 18)
In Panem District 3 is associated with technology and electronics production and is the home district of Katniss' allies Beetee and Wiress from the Quarter Quell. Technology and electronics have a natural connection with air signs because they are known for being intelligent. Aquarius is a fixed air sign known for being rebellious, independent thinkers. Considering how important Beetee's involvement in the rebellion is, the connections between Aquarius and District 3 are abundant. Aquarians are known for being humanitarians who fight for the causes they believe in, as Beetee does. This sign, like all fixed signs, hates being controlled and told what to do.
Ruled by Saturn in ancient astrology and Uranus in modern astrology, Aquarius has a knack for getting above a problem, being able to look at it from an objective perspective. This is somewhat true for all air signs, but being ruled by Uranus, Aquarius has a knack for thinking outside the box, valuing freedom of expression and thought above all else. Uranus' link to innovation is a clear connection to District 3's talent with technology and electronics. Aquarius is a sign that fights for liberation, making it an obvious player in freeing Panem from the tyrant President Snow.
Pisces: District 4 (February 19—March 20)
The most obvious astrological associations between a district and a zodiac sign are between District 4 and Pisces. District 4 is a coastal district contributing food to Panem through their fishing industries. Pisces is a mutable water sign known for their empathy and intuition. In the Quarter Quell, Mags volunteers, taking Annie's place. Annie was traumatized by the Hunger Games she won and hasn't recovered, making her incapable of entering the arena again. Mags, although elderly, volunteers, knowing she won't make it out alive. She willingly sacrificed herself for Annie. This is a trait Pisces are known for. They are the martyrs of the zodiac.
Pisces are always looking for their true love, as we see in the relationship between Finnick and Annie, when they get married in District 13 after Annie is rescued from the Capitol. Their willingness to dive into marriage despite the stark realities of the rebellion highlights Pisces' tendency to avoid reality. Sensitive, empathetic, and intuitive, doesn't necessarily paint a portrait of a warrior, but Finnick, like most Pisces, is tougher than he looks. When Finnick dies saving Katniss in the underground tunnels of the Capitol in "Mockingjay Part 2," we see once again how tangled up a Pisces identity is with that of a martyr. They are always willing to sacrifice themselves for others, as Finnick and Mags did for Katniss and the rebellion for a free Panem.
