Deku's Float Ability From My Hero Academia Explained
In a world where superpowers are commonplace, high school becomes an entirely different beast.
Based on the manga series by Kohei Horikoshi, "My Hero Academia" follows the kind-hearted Izuku "Deku" Midoriya (Daiki Yamashita in Japanese, Justin Briner in English). Originally born without any powers, called quirks, Deku eventually inherits an amazing one in the form of "One For All" from his idol and Japan's greatest hero, All Might (Kenta Miyake and Christopher Sabat).
To go from being a quirkless, but dedicated, student in a world where 80% of the population possesses a quirk, to then wielding the impressive One For All skill was at first jarring to Deku, but his mentor All Might believes that the young man has the moxie to become the world's greatest superhero.
One For All is a collection of several different superpowers, and each time the skill is passed to another, the previous user's skills are added to the collective pool. This means that Deku has tons of skills to master, like energy blasts, a preternatural sense of incoming danger, and energy whips — but how exactly does the Float ability fit in the versatile repertoire of Deku's One For All?
Float allows Deku to fly at high speeds
Considering the nature of One For All and the way it is passed from hero to hero, not all of the powers contained within are immediately accessible. Float was one such ability, and it was imbued into One For All by Nana Shimura (Mie Sonozaki and Stephanie Young), All Might's former mentor. The power allows the user to at first levitate, but with greater usage and skill, it becomes a powerful means of transportation and evasion.
Deku first activates this skill when he instinctively uses it to save his friends and get away from Tomura Shigaraki (Koki Uchiyama and Eric Vale). Even though the quirk is called Float, it really is just the ability to move in the air and fly in any direction at will with incredible speeds. Deku uses it both defensively and offensively –- the ability to fly can be used to dodge attacks, rescue friends and innocents, or deliver devastating offensive moves.
Of course, being in a city populated by both heroes and villains, a lightning-fast mode of transportation is always great for response times.
