Who Plays Luffy In Netflix's One Piece?

Netflix is certainly cashing in on the recent anime hype as of late with several live-action adaptations. There was the 2017 film "Death Note" with big names such as Willem Dafoe and LaKeith Stanfield attached. Then, of course, there was the much-anticipated "Cowboy Bebop" starring John Cho in 2021. Unfortunately for anime fans, both titles were ultimately dubbed flops, with "Cowboy Bebop" canceled not even a month after its release, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Next up (hoping not to meet a similar fate) is Netflix's recently announced adaptation of the anime hit "One Piece." The anime series follows Monkey D. Luffy, a young man with a rubberized body, on his journey to becoming king of the pirates. To become pirate king, Luffy and his band of Straw Hat Pirates sail the seas in search of the world's most precious treasure, the One Piece. According to Crunchyroll, since its premiere in 1999, the series has aired over 1000 episodes, which should be plenty of source material for Netflix to draw upon. It was also named the top anime of the world in 2016, with its large loyal fanbase (per Business Insider).

With so much riding on the adaptation, Netflix needed to tap the perfect actors to embody the Straw Hat crew. If you're wondering who's set out to play the series' most iconic pirate, look no further.

Iñaki Godoy is set to play Luffy in Netflix's One Piece

The actor tapped to play the fearless pirate leader Luffy in Netflix's "One Piece" is rising star Iñaki Godoy. The role may serve as the Mexican actor's big break,as he has just seven acting credits under his belt before "One Piece," according to his IMDb page.

You may recognize Godoy from his most notable role in "Who Killed Sara?" which became Netflix's most popular non-English title ever with 55 million viewers tuning in within a month of its release (per Deadline). Godoy stars as Bruno, the stepson of Rodolfo Lazcano (Alejandro Nones), who the series protagonist, Álex Guzmán (Manolo Cardona), is seeking revenge from for his role in his sister's murder.

Godoy wanted to assure "One Piece" fans that he knows just how much of an undertaking portraying Luffy is. He said in a recent Instagram post, "I've been doing my research on one piece and I know how much this means to all of you. I wanna let you know I will do my best and I appreciate all the kindness you've showed me."

As of now, there's no set release date for "One Piece," so fans will have to patiently wait and see how the adaptation will turn out.
