Why Drew From How I Met Your Father Looks So Familiar
"How I Met Your Mother" got the spinoff treatment, with "How I Met Your Father" given a straight-to-series order at Hulu (via Deadline). Hilary Duff leads the new project as Sophie, who will narrate the entire show to her son. "HIMYF" signed on some heavy hitters to its cast, including "Life of Pi" star Suraj Sharma, "Sex and the City" icon Kim Cattrall, and "Grown-ish" regular Francia Raisa.
You might have been able to identify these actors from the get-go, or perhaps you struggled with where you might have seen them before. The latter was probably the case for "HIMYF" character Drew, played by Josh Peck. Peck has been in the entertainment industry since he was a child but isn't known for big blockbusters or noteworthy television series. He's one of those actors you might find yourself describing as "that guy from that thing." While he's a very accomplished voice actor these days, here are some of the most significant live-action projects Peck has been attached to over the years.
Josh Peck got his big break in Drake & Josh
Josh Peck is predominantly known for his role on Nickelodeon's "Drake & Josh." The series follows stepbrothers (played by Peck and Drake Bell), who suddenly start living together when Drake's mother and Josh's father marry. Drake is a super popular musician at school, while Josh is known for being more of a nerd. The series spawned a TV movie — "Merry Christmas, Drake & Josh" — which landed in 2008.
In a Reddit AMA, Peck noted that about 90% of his character's life on "Drake & Josh" very much mirrored his personal life. He also revealed his favorite episode ever, saying, "My favorite episode of Drake & Josh was the one with the baby, where I was with a baby stuck on the roof, it was one of the first six episodes we ever shot, it's super nostalgic for me. We used a real baby, and it would really pee on us. And then my favorite movie where I wasn't in, Searching for Bobby Fischer."
Josh Peck appeared alongside Chris Hemsworth in Red Dawn
One of Josh Peck's biggest projects after the conclusion of "Drake & Josh" was "Red Dawn" — the 2012 remake of the 1989 film of the same name. Starring Chris Hemsworth, Josh Hutcherson, and Adrianne Palicki alongside Peck, the film was a total disaster at the box office and among critics and viewers. Earning a 15% critic score and a 51% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, "Red Dawn" was an utter letdown despite its star power.
Peck played Matt Eckert, the brother of Hemsworth's Jed Eckert. Set in Spokane, Washington, North Koreans invade Jed and Matt's hometown. Along with some friends, the brothers form a guerrilla resistance group, known as the Wolverines, and fight back against the invasion. Peck told Collider in 2012 that this movie was really the crossover from becoming a child star to an adult actor. "If 10-year-old Josh could see this movie, I would have been able to avoid a lot of angst, growing up, knowing that this would be the final result. For a lot of boys, running around with a gun and being an action star and getting to kiss a beautiful girl is a total dream come true," he told the outlet.
Peck landed a starring role on Fox's Grandfathered
In 2015, Josh Peck appeared in "Grandfathered," a Fox sitcom which only ran for one season. Peck was in every episode of the series, which starred John Stamos — a grandfather who only finds out he is one after he meets a son (and his daughter) he never knew existed. Peck played Gerald E. Kingsley, the son of Stamos' Jimmy. His mother, Sara Kingsley, was played by "Criminal Minds" star Paget Brewster. Sara and Jimmy used to date over 25 years ago, and shortly after they broke up, she discovered she was pregnant and never told him.
According to Deadline, while "Grandfathered" had okay ratings, the ideas for Season 2 didn't interest the execs at Fox, so the show was scrapped. Despite only getting one season, Peck was super happy with "Grandfathered," and especially his time with Stamos. "We're kindred spirits. We bromance hard. We went to Halloween horror night on Saturday together," Peck told Entertainment Weekly.
Josh Peck nabbed another spinoff role in Turner & Hooch
Josh Peck nabbed the lead in Disney+ original series "Turner & Hooch." The buddy-cop show was dubbed a legacy sequel based on the Tom Hanks film of the same name. Peck played U.S. Marshal Scott Turner, who becomes the owner of a Dogue De Bordeaux named Hooch. With Hooch at his side, Scott starts to unravel a mystery around his father's death which was always assumed to be an accident. Unfortunately, fans of the series got terrible news when it announced it wouldn't move past one season.
One of the show's stars, Reginald VelJohnson, had hinted that the show was coming to an end long before the cancellation was announced. The actor told ComicBook.com, "Well, as far as I know, they're trying to sell it to another network or something like that. That's what I heard." He added, "But as of now, it's not going to be picked up, I don't think."
While the abrupt cancellation of any series is sad, it opened Peck up for his role on "How I Met Your Father." Should "Turner & Hooch" have stayed on Disney+, we may not have gotten Peck as Drew in the new Hulu project.
