Watch Tobey Maguire's Dark, Shirtless Spider-Man Screen Test
Now where was this guy?
The Hollywood Reporter unearthed one of Tobey Maguire's early screen tests for Sam Raimi's Spider-Man, and it reveals a much darker, more brooding version of the character than we saw in the final product. It also indicates that Maguire was definitely hitting the gym on the regular, as he's far more ripped than he was in the trilogy.
In the clip, which is just about a minute long, Maguire is the strong and silent type and he doesn't utter a single word as he takes down a trio of muggers who like to drop F-bombs. Of course, we didn't get that kind of profanity in Raimi's Spider-Man, which was rated PG-13. The swearing is censored in the screen test.
But Maguire looks a lot like a cross between Jean-Claude Van Damme and Neo as he single-handedly fights the bad guys (shirtless for some reason), and it seems like there's some post-production involved. We doubt Maguire can really throw anyone quite so far.
It's not clear why the tone of the screen test is so different from the movie, but it's definitely worth watching. If nothing else, it'll help you forget some of that regrettable (and laughably awkward) dancing in Spider-Man 3.
We already know Tom Holland's take on the character in Spider-Man: Homecoming isn't anywhere near as dark as Maguire's screen test. That flick is expected to crush the box office when it premieres this weekend.
Meanwhile, check out some of the most terrible things Spider-Man has ever done. We left out the dancing.
