The Expanse Character You Are Based On Your Zodiac Sign
There are plenty of things to love about "The Expanse." As one of the most ambitious dramatic sci-fi series ever made and a spiritual successor to "Battlestar Galactica," this series has something for everyone: scientific realism, mysterious ancient alien tech, weird space recipes, high-stakes intergalactic political drama, freaky alien animals, and loads of great hair. Of course, it also has a plethora of interesting characters, from badass Martians to untrustworthy inyalowdas.
If the Roci crew learned anything from their protomolecule-fueled adventures, it's that in a world where unseen forces may be a threat to humanity's very existence and seen forces definitely are, it can be hard to know one's place in the grand scheme. For some folks, the key to coping with big changes is as simple as getting the right neck tattoo or wearing the proper hat, while others need to jump right into the big middle of everything to the point of self-parody. To decide how best to handle yourself when the Ring Gate goes wonky, check out this guide to which "Expanse" character you are based on your zodiac sign. And remember your doors and corners, kid. That's where they get you.
Aries: Camina Drummer
If you're a spring baby with a birthday between March 21st and April 19th, congratulations on being a total, unwaveringly badass beltalowda bosmang because your "Expanse" character is Camina Drummer (Cara Gee). As an Aries, she may be ruled by Mars, but she's the ultimate Belter, willing to put herself in the action time and time again for the sake of her people. Although she may look small, Camina D is powerful and dynamic from the top of her tight French braid to the soles of her OPA-issued boots. You're a hardcore military machine when you have to be just like the bosmang herself when she showed the world a little paralysis can't keep her out of the action, strapping herself into a DIY exoskeleton that made MacGyver look like a preschooler playing with DUPLO blocks.
But Drummer is more than just military acumen and refined badassery. With her sharp wit and loyalty, Drummer's personality is as bold as her Lagertha-core smoky eye look and endearing enough to foster a close friendship with Naomi and earn her a place in a fairly domestic little space-pirate polycule. At times, your competitive side and impulsivity can be self-sabotaging, just as Drummer's was when Klaes Ashford (David Strathairn) joined her on the OPAS Behemoth (née Nauvoo). But overall, your Aries personality will fare well in the interplanetary future as long as you remember Drummer's words: "You may think that you're scared, but you're not. That isn't fear. That's your sharpness. That's your power."
Taurus: Roberta "Bobbie" Draper
Do you blow out your candles between April 20th and May 21st? As a Taurus, your "Expanse" zodiac buddy is Martian Gunnery Sergeant Roberta Draper (Frankie Adams), AKA "Gunny." All you need is an MCRN jumpsuit and a top knot and you'll be ready for fisticuffs with the Hybrid. Taurus may be an earth sign, but Gunny is a perfect Martian soldier down to her fierce DNA. Although she may be a mighty warrior, as a Tauran, Bobbie dreams of a pastoral world where she can enjoy the scenery and live a quiet life in her little house on the terraformed prairie. She isn't afraid of doing what has to be done, but her ultimate goal is always a peaceful, secure future.
Like the bull she is, Bobbie often charges, fights, and EVA walks through situations to save the day while the other signs are still busy weighing out the options. As with every other sign, Tauran traits can be a double-edged sword, and Bobbie's stubbornness and inflexibility are a perfect example, often causing her to butt heads with her superiors and peers alike. But it's Bobbie's kindness and compassion that truly make her more than just a Crossfit beast in power armor. Whether she's speed-running the Razorback, power-eating cucumber sandwiches, or sightseeing 24th-century NYC poverty row, Bobbie's empathy helps her connect with others everywhere she goes.
Gemini: The Protomolecule
If you unwrap your birthday presents between May 21 and June 21 and you identify with the mythical twins Castor and Pollux, your new favorite color is blue, da ba dee da ba die, because your "Expanse" character is the protomolecule. Technically more of a thing than a character but still fully a drama queen in its own right, protomolecule is the super-trippy, pseudo-sentient magical asbestos of a mind-blowingly advanced and suspiciously extinct alien race. And they left this stuff all over the place. Part magic quantum computer wizardry, part glow stick rave, and all hot mess, protomolecule is versatile and useful one minute and volatile and unstable the next.
As a Gemini, protomolecule is the life of the party for better or for worse, and everyone wants some face time with it. But as protomolecule spreads around infecting everything it comes into contact with like glitter at Burning Man, sometimes they get a little more than they bargained for. Just like the Gemini twins, protomolecule can change depending on who or what it interacts with. Naturally inquisitive and intelligent, protomolecule is capable of more than most people realize if they'd just sit back and let it do its magic from terraforming to generating wormhole gates. If you're a Gemini, try to steer clear of shady influences, especially mad scientists, corporate goons, and politicians, since once you bond with someone, it tends to permanently change both parties. Above all, don't be afraid to set limits. Especially speed limits.
Cancer: Amos Burton
As a Cancer born between June 22 and July 22, your "Expanse" patron saint is Amos Burton (Wes Chatham), AKA Murder Snuggles. Comprised of baby face, bulk, and AP, Amos is the ultimate embodiment of crabby vibes. Sure, Amos will take out literally anyone who needs a good face-punching, but generally only in the line of serving the greater good or protecting those he cares about, all of this despite his traumatic upbringing in the darkest underbelly of 24th-century Baltimore. Family-oriented Amos is a protector and nurturer, constantly putting himself between others and harm or taking on the difficult tasks that others can't, like when he takes the gun from Prax (Terry Chen) to kill Protogen scientist Dr. Lawrence Strickland (Ted Atherton) to stop his crimes against children.
Easily the most loyal of the signs, Cancers like Amos faithfully stand by their given and chosen families and love deeply. Even when their trust is broken, all they need is a little time and personal space before they're ready to forgive and move on, as Amos eventually does despite Naomi repeatedly breaking his trust, lying to him, and slipping him a hypodermic mickey. As a Cancer, Amos is mentally shrewd, aware of his surroundings, and incredibly perceptive, insightfully doling out character analyses to everyone he meets from Miller to Murtry. Just follow his lead and get yourself a good crew, a best friend in the whole world, and some plants to tend and you'll be all right. And remember: there's more than one way to use a toothbrush.
Leo: Chrisjen Avasarala
Late summer birthday kids who rack up the gift cards somewhere between July 23 and August 22 most identify with glamorous political powerhouse and UN Secretary-General Chrisjen Avasarala (Shohreh Aghdashloo). Raised in a dynasty of politicians, dominant Leo Avasarala at first glance appears to be all privilege and Machiavellianism. Like most Leos, Avasarala appreciates the finer things in life, creatively adorning herself with decadent saris and jewels, elaborate hairstyles, and dramatic couture fashions that exude power, history, and femininity. To some, this appearance may seem pompous or out-of-touch, but with all eyes on her, it's clear she's in charge when she walks into a room.
As a Leo, Avasarala dominates every space she enters, even when she presents a demure facade. A master manipulator, she'll use carrot or stick to shrewdly bend the will of others, moving them around like pieces on an intergalactic chessboard. With all of Avasarala's Big Roslin energy, it eventually becomes clear that everything she does is for the greater good of her home planet, Earth. Although Avasarala deals in serious stakes, like all big cats, she has her playful side, even if she doesn't love Amos calling her Chrissy. At the end of the day, remember her motto: "I like getting sh*t done, and I like to keep my head attached to my neck."
Virgo: Praxideke Meng
If you do the birthday boogie between August 23 and September 22, consider adding a hydroponic greenhouse to your Amazon wish list, because your "Expanse" character is Praxideke Meng. Move over, Butcher of Anderson Station, because the Gardener of Ganymede is here. Despite suffering through the profoundly bad luck of his homeworld Ganymede Station getting attacked by weaponized Hybrids and crushed by mirrors, as well as his daughter's pediatrician turning out to be an evil corporate scientist experimenting on children, Prax is still a relatively chill dude.
As a Virgon, the same fastidious nature, sharp intellect, and analytical mind that made him indispensable to the inhabitants of Ganymede Station quickly earn him the respect of the Roci crew. As helpful as he is smart, Super Space Farmer Prax's later innovations in Protomolecule-inspired modified polymerase yeast yield a food source that will help with the recovery on Earth. As parents, Virgos like Prax will do anything to keep their children safe, even if it means doing business with sketchy hackers and opening fire on an even sketchier pizza party. But one of Prax's finest traits is his enduring friendship with Amos. Virgos are known for their deep and abiding friendships, and Praxos is a bromance for the ages, with both Amos and Prax proudly declaring that the other is their "best friend in the whole world" and Amos even listing Prax as "MY BEST FRIEND" in his contacts list.
Libra: Naomi Nagata
If your autumn birthday falls between September 22 and October 23, your Libra "Expanse" character is the dreamy Naomi Nagata (Dominique Tipper). Besides having some of the most amazing hair in all of sci-fi, Naomi is a gifted engineer, a rockhopper legend, a seamlessly code-switching Belter, a fantastic dancer, and a friend to all (except, that is, Peaches). As a Libra, Naomi is compelled to bring balance, whether that means inter-Roci diplomacy or her personal journey to make up for her troubled past. Her need to bring balance to the universe extends to the macro scale when she evens out the UN-MCR Cold War by ensuring the OPA has a sample of Protomolecule since Earth and Mars already do, telling Holden, "It's part of the equation now."
Sure, Naomi has her share of family drama with her son Filip (Jasai Chase Owens), who sees her as a "pathetic, Earther-loving welwala," and her obnoxiously intense drama queen ex Marco Inaros (Keon Alexander) with his crazy eyes and low-rent Napoleon complex. But like the rest of the Roci crew, Naomi finds peace, healing, and mutually-supportive badassery among her chosen family. Like many Libras, Naomi is something of an introvert, but she never hesitates to speak up when it's necessary. When things get too intense, just follow Naomi's lead and brew up a piping hot, family-sized batch of Red Kibble.
Scorpio: Joe Miller
Does your birthday fall between October 23 and November 21? Grab yourself a hard-boiled trilby and a bottle of Halpenny Premium because you're former Star Helix detective Josephus "Joe" Aloisus Miller (Thomas Jane). Scorpio that he is, Miller tends to be a bit obsessive, a trait that serves as both an asset and a liability when he's investigating cases aboard Ceres. Like all Scorpios, Miller is cynical and poetically dark, but he's also something of a romantic at heart. He lives in a corrupt system, but his own rule-breaking comes with a code of ethics. Internal and private soul that he is, Miller spends a good deal of time combing the labyrinth of his own mind for that one detail or clue he missed, and it's that level of determination and focus that compels him to solve the Julie Mao case, no matter what it costs him.
Miller's deeply perceptive and contemplative nature also draws him to feel for others, falling in love with Julie Mao (Florence Faivre) while investigating her case and later joining the Roci as they work to stop the protomolecule. When he isn't being a broody sourpuss, Miller has his charming side, even regaling the Roci crew with his cheese-fart-infused tale of confiscating a thousand kilos of high-grade cheddar from dubious, nefarious cheese thieves. Don't let the snarky exterior fool you, however. Miller has a lot of complexity and heroism under the surface, and he doesn't hesitate to sacrifice himself for the good of the human race by joining Proto-Julie Mao on an impromptu Venus vacay.
Sagittarius: Alex Kamal
If your birthday coincides with Mariah Carey month each year, falling between November 22 to December 20, then giddy-up, little Martian. Your "Expanse" zodiac icon is none other than space cowboy Alex Kamal (Cas Anvar). Always handy with a colorful turn of phrase delivered on buttery-smooth Southern drawl, this former Martian Navy transport pilot is much more than just a run-of-the-mill stick jockey. Affable and friendly by nature, centaur Alex often says the first thing that pops into his head to a fault, causing him to occasionally run afoul of others who find his Martian-fried charm more of an acquired taste.
But he's an honest, good-natured fellow, and he sincerely wants to do right by others and save everyone. Of course, as his wife and child can attest to, he doesn't always do right by others. While he may not be the perfect family man, Alex still captures the best of what it means to be the Archer, ever-ready to follow Hoss James Holden (Steven Strait) into battle by blindly following death-defying orders. And you'd be hard-pressed to find anyone this side of the Ring Gate that can make a meaner space lasagna free of cheese, wheat, and tomatoes. All you need is a little love and voila! You've got yourself a bona fide staple of the Mariner Valley.
Capricorn: Jules-Pierre Mao
Born between December 21 and January 19, your "Expanse" zodiac aligns you with sexy corporate space villainy as a Capricorn. That's great news if you've always dreamed of traveling around the galaxy on an ultra-luxe space yacht, because your horoscope homie is none other than ultimate power-drunk pharma bro Jules-Pierre Mao (François Chau). As the gazillionaire magnate behind Mao-Kwikowski, Mao embodies everything evil about late-stage capitalism run amok, viewing the world and everything in it, including his own kin, as pieces in a massive game of strategy and corporate domination. When his company's mucking about in protomolecule technology gets his daughter Julie killed, the practical and calculating Mao manages to keep his composure long enough to sign off on low-grade genocide on Eros.
Like all Capricorns, Mao understands that the best plans require careful planning and discipline, staying the course even when it means twisting and contorting the empty void where his soul should be until there is nothing left inside. A pragmatic Capricorn to the last, everything is up for negotiation, even a pair of cute kids he meets on Ganymede station. After all, torturing children is horrible, but if it means he can finish creating the Protomolecule Hybrid, what's another tally on the body count? And with Mao's Hex Bug-shaped private cruise ship the Guanshiyin, being diabolical has never been so luxurious.
Aquarius: Julie Mao
As an Aquarius with a birthday falling between January 20 and February 18, your "Expanse" zodiac character is none other than the elusive and often blue heiress Juliette Andromeda Mao. Independent, free-spirited, and willful, Julie patently rejects everything her father stands for, rebelliously joining the OPA and hatching a plot to intercept and undermine Protogen's sneaky protomolecule shenanigans. When that plan goes awry and she ends up inadvertently becoming Patient Zero for the horror show on Eros, she embodies the water carrier symbol as a living vessel for the protomolecule.
This should be the end of her story, but as an ethereal, otherworldly Aquarius, Julie manages to reach across space and time, inhabiting the heart of Joe Miller in a way that ultimately leads to earth getting saved from an untimely doom. As an Aquarius, Julie is incredibly intelligent, teaching herself archery and becoming a gifted transplanetary racer. She is also unpredictable, defying others' expectations of her at every turn. She's also kind and self-sacrificing, at one point trading her own future health to save some Belters. In the end, her spirit is so strong that she is able to affect the protomolecule, changing the path of the asteroid first towards Earth and then to Venus under the guidance of Joe Miller.
Pisces: James Holden
As the final sign in the zodiac with a birthday falling between February 19 and March 20, your Pisces spirit aligns with everyone's favorite Don Quixote fanboy, James "Jim" Holden. As unique as his eight-parent DNA, Holden is something of an idealist. But one of his most defining characteristics is his strong moral compass, which he can't seem to escape despite his urge to be a hero leading him into the literal belly of the beast on numerous occasions. This Holden Maneuver various lands him in the business end of the Slow Zone, the gooey center of the Ring Station, and in the dank, Green Blindness-infested bowels of a Ring Builder ruin.
But Holden's true character can best be understood through his relationship with his deepest love, coffee. Dreamer and idealist that he is, Holden is willing to put in the work to get the perfect brew. As a thoughtful, caring Pisces, he understands the value of a good cup of Joe and he wants to make sure his fam gets a fresh mug before they take off. Sure, he goes full ProtoHybrid on the Roci's broken coffee maker at one point, but running a stolen warship is a job for full-caf. When he's not beating down Mr. Coffee or saving whole civilizations, Holden is letting his gentle Pisces side show as he cozies up to his bae Naomi Nagata or explores his intuitive, spiritual side while chatting with his protomolecule hallucination pal the Investigator.
