Lily James Cast In Mamma Mia Sequel
Mamma Mia, we definitely couldn't resist you.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, Lily James has been cast in Universal's sequel to Mamma Mia. James will step into the role of young Donna, the adult version of which is played by Meryl Streep.
Appropriately titled Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again!, the follow-up flick was first announced a few months ago. The sequel will return to the mystical Greek island of Kalokairi and feature plenty of ABBA songs sung by stars of the first film, including Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Amanda Seyfried, and Colin Firth. THR describes the film as one that "goes back and forth in time to show how relationships forged in the past resonate in the present."
It's unclear whether James will lend her pipes to her own solo tracks for the upcoming film, but her past singing experience indicates that she'd do well if given the chance. James previously starred in the live-action film Cinderella, in which she sang "A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes."
Judy Craymer of Littlestar and Gary Goetzman of Playtone, the pair who produced the original musical movie, return for Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again! Additionally, musicians and lyricists Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus climb aboard to provide all catchy tunes. The two will also serve as executive producers. The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel scribe Ol Parker is on board to direct the sequel.
Fans may recognize James from her work in the mini-series War & Peace, or from her current role in Edgar Wright's Baby Driver alongside Ansel Elgort. James will next star in the romantic drama Guernsey, the Winston Churchill drama starring Gary Goldman Darkest Hour, and the refreshed Western Little Woods.
Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again! is slated for release on July 20, 2018. In the meantime, get familiar with the films that will blow us all away next year.
