The Encanto Character You Are Based On Your Zodiac Sign
Disney's "Encanto" is a beautiful story about family, magic, and community set in a remote village in Columbia. 50 years ago, the Madrigal family founded the village of Encanto, when Abuela Alma and Abuelo Pedro fled their village, with friends and neighbors, because of civil unrest. The small group of villagers who fled with Alma and Pedro witnessed a miracle after Pedro sacrificed himself to save the group of travelers. This miracle gave Alma a candle that won't burn out to light their way to a special place where the group could build a community surrounding the magical home built for the Madrigals. This miracle later bestowed upon the Madrigal family, magical gifts the descendants of Pedro and Alma could use to serve their community.
Mirabel is the heroine of our story. She is funny and plucky, but she is also the only grandchild in the Madrigal line who was not blessed with a magical gift for her 5th birthday. The day our story begins is the gifting ceremony for Mirabel's younger cousin Antonio. He is frightened that he might not be given a gift too. His concerns were needless because he gets a wonderful gift. During Antonio's party, Mirabel sees cracks forming in the family's magical home, and the candle almost burns out. She fears their magic is failing and is determined to help despite being admonished by her grandmother. Conflict can't be avoided in a family filled with bold personalities. The members of the Madrigal family symbolize the zodiac signs, influencing both their magical gifts and their personalities.

Aries: Luisa (March 21—April 19)
Aries is a cardinal fire sign, known for their courage and determination, but they can be impatient and moody. Aries is one of the most active zodiac signs, enjoying physical challenges and disliking inactivity. Aries are dynamic, energetic, spontaneous, and temperamental. This sign is driven by an innate need to prove their strength, linking Aries with Luisa's gift of physical strength. Luisa relies on her strength, worrying someday, she might buckle under the mounting pressures of family expectations. As we learn in the song she sings to Mirabel.
Mars, the Roman god of war, rules Aries. Like Aries, the Greek god of war, Mars represents the spirit of battle; but in the Roman empire, Mars has older associations with agriculture, herds, and the fertility of springtime, the season Aries are born at the start of. As a Cardinal sign, Aries embodies the energy and attitude of eldest siblings, further linking this sign to Luisa. They are motivated leaders who take responsibility for getting things started, throwing themselves into activity each day, just like Luisa. Luisa embodies the physicality of the Ram, the symbol for Aries.
Like other fire signs, Luisa can be quick to lose her temper, flaring up in an angry outburst as she does when Mirabel questions her about the waning magic. Luisa, like Aries, might respond passionately at times, but they are honest, as we can see when Luisa hugs Mirabel, admitting her strength waned when Mirabel saw the cracks in their casita. Luisa, like Mars, the ruler of Aries, takes on the role of protector of her community, further liking her to this fire sign.
Taurus: Isabela (April 20—May 20)
Reliable, practical, and grounded, Taurus is a fixed earth sign. You can count on Taurus, as they are driven by a sense of duty, like the other earth signs. We see this in Isabela when she confesses to Mirabel that she has no desire to marry Mariano; she was doing it for the family. In Isabel, we also see Taurus' tendency to play it safe. When Isabel creates a cactus in her frustration while arguing with Mirabel, she is inspired by what she could do creatively if she would only give herself more freedom, a lesson many a Taurus would be wise to take to heart.
Taurus can be stubborn and uncompromising. We see this in the antagonistic relationship between Isabela and her younger sister Mirabel. Although everyone thinks Isabel is perfect, this icy perfection irks Mirabel, an Aquarius. The two sisters are aggravated by each other because, although they are very different, they share a fixed modality, making them both stubborn. Taurus is especially stubborn because they are a fixed earth sign, making them rooted in place and uncomfortable with change.
Ruled by Venus, the goddess of love, Taureans are doubly connected to abundance and fertility of the earth. Isabela is feminine with long flowing hair; adored in her family and community for her beauty. Isabela's gift is connected with vegetation and flowers, making her a physical manifestation of the abundance and fertility of spring. Taureans are known for their love of gardening. Isabela's gift takes this to a magical extreme, making her capable of decorating her home and town with carpets of flowers. Isabela's room is feminine and verdant, with blooming flowers and vines. But like Venus, Isabela can become volatile. It might take a lot to push Taurus to anger, but once provoked, their anger can have the power of an earthquake.
Gemini: Camilo (May 21—June 21)
Curious and adaptable, Gemini is a mutable air sign. Camilo is a manifestation of Gemini as he is a gifted shape-shifter, capable of making himself look like anyone in the village, becoming their twin. Called the chameleon of the zodiac, Gemini is a known shape-shifter, able to read the energy of a room and adapt. Because of this ability, Gemini can talk to and identify with almost anyone they meet at a party. Camilo's magical gift is a physical manifestation of this Gemini trait. Gemini sees a reflection of themself in others just as easily as they can be a mirror to hold up for others. As an air sign, Gemini is a natural communicator. We see this when Camilo greets everyone in the village when they come to celebrate Antonio's gifting ceremony. Air signs are also known for their intellect and their objectivity.
Ruled by Mercury, the trickster god, Camilo embodies this mischievous energy. We see Camilo's playful nature when he takes on the guise of his older sister Dolores to get seconds at breakfast. The word mercurial is linked to Mercury's changeable nature and the modality of Gemini. Those with a mutable modality, like Gemini, are adaptable and comfortable with change, something that comes in handy when you are born at the end of a season. As a mutable air sign, Geminis are talented storytellers, as we see during the song, "We Don't Talk About Bruno." Camilo takes on the guise of Bruno telling the story, relishing in frightening Mirabel.
Cancer: Julieta (June 22—July 22)
Cancer is a cardinal water sign ruled by the Moon. Cancers are the archetypal mother of the zodiac. Like Julieta, they are nurturing and loving. Julieta also embodies this maternal energy through her gift of healing others through food. Cancers are homebodies who value family and community. We can see this in Julieta's desire to help her community with her gift of healing and the way she cares for her daughters Luisa, Isabel, and Mirabel.
Like all water signs, Cancers are intuitive and empathetic. We see Julieta's empathy when she consoles Mirabel after she interrupts Antonio's party, saying the house was filled with cracks. Julieta empathizes with how Antonio's gifting day must have been emotionally charged and difficult for Mirabel, considering how disappointing her gifting day was. In the way Julieta comforts Mirabel, we can see her cardinal modality. While cardinal signs are known for being leaders, Cancer leads in a more subtle way by creating the emotional environment in their home, infusing it with a warm, homey feeling.
The Moon, the celestial glowing orb in our sky, rules Cancer, representing the feminine principle in astrology. The Moon represents our inner lives, our heart, and motherhood. Like the tide, Cancer's moods can be ever-shifting, but unlike Pisces and Scorpio, Cancer often holds their emotions close to the vest, not expressing them but to a select few who they trust implicitly and feel comfortable being vulnerable with. Because of their sensitivity, Cancers need a stable and caring partner, someone like Augustin, Juliet's husband.
Leo: Antonio (July 23—August 22)
Leo is a fire sign ruled by the Sun. Like Leo, Antonio has a warm heart. He is generous and cheerful, as we see when he offers his room to Bruno to do a ceremony asking for a vision. Antonio's gift is speaking to animals, a perfect gift for the Lion, king of the jungle. Leos are known for their ability to lead by bringing together different groups to accomplish common goals. Antonio's ability to understand both humans and animals gives him a unique ability to communicate with everyone in Encanto, making this kind of collaboration possible.
Like other fire signs, Leo is enthusiastic, creative, and fun; Antonio embodies all these qualities. Although he is just a little boy, we can surmise he will be a passionate man like his father, Felix, who shares his fire element. Leo is a fixed fire sign and a bit of a contradiction. People with a fixed modality can be stubborn, and although we don't see this trait in Antonio, don't be surprised if it rises to the surface when he becomes an adolescent, and he is testing his boundaries. We see Antonio's fixed modality manifest in his dedication to his family, as fixed signs are loyal.
Virgo: Dolores (August 23—September 22)
Virgo is a mutable earth sign. Virgos are loyal and kind but analytical and prone to worry. We see this proclivity to anxiety and worry when Dolores overhears Augustin and Mirabel talking about the vision Bruno had connecting Mirabel to the cracks in the house and the weakening magic in the family. Her nerves get the best of her during Isabela's engagement dinner, and Dolores shares her knowledge with her brother Camilo, who tells their father, Felix. This is unsurprising, as both Virgo and Gemini are ruled by the same planet.
Ruled by Mercury, the messenger god, Virgos are great communicators, linking perfectly with Dolores' gift of super hearing. One thing people often overlook about communication is that listening is key, and Dolores is an excellent listener, knowing the secrets of everyone in their village. Because of her gift, Dolores has an advantage in knowing anything people have said. Much like her brother, who can assume another's visage, both Dolores and Camilo are privy to secrets, just like Mercury.
As a mutable earth sign, Virgo is a bit of a contradiction. Earth signs are practical and reliable but set in their ways. Signs with a mutable modality, on the other hand, are adaptable and capable of compromise — these seemingly contradictory ways of being manifest in Virgo, giving them a talent for organization and planning. With Dolores' access to privileged information, she would be an excellent party planner, as we see when she tells the family Mariano will propose to Isabela at dinner.
Libra: Augustin (September 22—October 23)
Libra is a cardinal air sign. Libra loves harmony and hates confrontations, as we see when Augustin asks Mirabel to act like she knows nothing of Bruno's vision to ensure Isabela's engagement dinner will be flawless. Like Libra, Augustin is empathetic. Libra uses the intellect all air signs possess to understand others' motivations, making them excellent counselors and arbitrators during a dispute. They have a knack for getting above a problem and being able to look at it from an objective perspective. Augustin's empathy comes through when he explains to Mirabel that he understands how it feels to live without a gift in a magically endowed family.
Augustin married into the Madrigal family when he wed Julieta, thus inheriting no magical gifts. Venus, the goddess of love, rules Libra. Libras are romantic and devoted mates, as Augustin is to Julieta. We see Libra's cardinal nature reflected in Augustin's personal style and contributions to the community. Libra's are fashion-forward people who set the trends, and Augustin always looks dapper while playing the piano to contribute to the festive atmosphere at family parties.
Scorpio: Pepa (October 23—November 21)
A fixed water sign, Scorpio is known for being intense, dramatic, and passionate. These traits align perfectly with Pepa's personality and gift, as her moods control the weather. While the Madrigal siblings are technically triplets and should be the same sign, the siblings' personalities and gifts reveal they are manifestations of the three water signs. Water is the realm of emotions, thus people with a water sign or a water heavy chart are in their element when dealing with feelings. Scorpios, like Pepa, can be moody and brooding. Scorpio has a fixed modality, making it the most stubborn in the element of water, and often getting stuck in their emotional states.
Ruled by Pluto in modern astrology and Mars in ancient Astrology, Scorpio is the most aggressive and assertive of the water signs, and Pepa certainly can be a little scary, just like Scorpio. Pluto has associations with destruction, death, sex and regeneration, and it seems fitting that Pepa, who can control the weather, the very cycles of life, would be symbolized by the Scorpion. Pepa wears sun earrings, the ruler of Leo, the sign of her son Antonio. But these suns also hint at Scorpio's unique difference from the other water signs. Scorpions live in the desert, and the metaphorical waters Scorpio swims in are the hot waters of transformation.
Sagittarius: Felix (November 22—December 21)
Sagittarius is a mutable fire sign. The Sagittarius is adventurous, funny, and energetic — perfectly describing Felix. Felix's fiery personality balances out his wife Pepa's moody, dark nature, bringing sunshine to a cloudy day. Although water and fire signs typically aren't compatible, the Scorpion has a more fiery energy, complementing Sagittarius' extroverted and enthusiastic nature. Another unifying trait both Scorpio and Sagittarius share is being brutally honest, sometimes past the point of civility, ensuring a lively and passionate relationship, as Felix and Pepa enjoy with their playful bickering.
Sagittarius has a mutable modality, making this sign very action-oriented. Whether he is leading the dance party or helping rebuild the Madrigal home, Felix is engaged in activities with his community. Fire signs have big personalities and are known for their spontaneity and exuberance, describing Felix's personality to a T. Like other fire signs, the Sagittarius is warm-hearted, confident, and playful, making Felix the perfect counterpoint to Pepa, who can be obsessive and serious.
Capricorn: Abuela Alma (December 22—January 19)
Capricorn is a cardinal earth sign. Capricorns are disciplined and responsible people who value tradition and family. They are serious by nature and don't like change, making them seem stiff and stubborn. Abuela Alma has all these qualities. Although she doesn't have a magical gift like her children or grandchildren, Abuela Alma witnessed the miracle, accepting the eternally burning candle, making her the keeper of the flame and her family's traditions.
Abuela Alma is the matriarch of both the Madrigal family and the village of Encanto, making her an obvious Capricorn. Capricorns, like all cardinal signs, are natural leaders, who are comfortable delegating many people. Like Capricorn, Alma has exacting standards, as we see when Mirabel and Alma argue. Mirabel says she will never be good enough for Abuela Alma, blaming her inflexibility and the pressure of her high standards for damaging the house and its magic. This inflexibility and devotion to tradition and safety come from being an earth sign.
What Mirabel doesn't understand about her Abuela Alma is that her need for tradition, stability, and safety also comes from the trauma she experienced losing both her home and her husband when she fled to Encanto with her babies. Ruled by Saturn, Capricorn is all about rules, restrictions, and boundaries. Saturn teaches that in order to heal and move forward, we must look back, unearthing the traumas of our past, as Abuela Alma does with Mirabel at the river where Abuelo Pedro died. After making peace with her past, Alma is ready to build a new, stronger foundation, which is the function of Capricorn in their community.
Aquarius: Mirabel (January 20–February 18)
Aquarius is a fixed air sign. Progressive and humanitarian, Aquarius is driven by an innate need to question traditions and rules. It's no wonder Abuela Alma and Mirabel's personalities clash. Like Mirabel, Aquarius dances to the beat of their own drum. Like other air signs, Aquarius is an intellectual and idealistic sign, driven to communicate. We see this in Mirabel being the mouthpiece for the family. But when it comes time for her to investigate what is happening to their casita, Mirabel turns to her family, talking to everyone about what is going on, even being willing to discuss the taboo subject of Tio Bruno.
We see Aquarius' fixed modality in Mirabel's actions. Fixed signs are dedicated and tenacious. They are the workhorses of the zodiac, willing to roll up their sleeves and get the job done. Once Mirabel decides to fix the magic and save her family, nothing is going to stop her. Mirabel might clash with her Abuela, but she is doing it because of her loyalty to her family. Fixed signs are loyal. Aquarians, like Mirabel, are natural leaders and organizers within their communities, being naturally drawn to activism.
Ruled by Saturn in ancient astrology and Uranus in modern astrology, Aquarius values independence and attaining a higher consciousness. Like air, Uranus lifts Aquarius up above our earthly concerns, giving Aquarius a universal perspective. Where Saturn represents restrictions, Uranus represents freedom — underscoring the clash between Abuela Alma and Mirabel. Alma represents tradition and the past, while Mirabel represents liberation, progress, and the future. Mirabel's sign of Aquarius also represents the stage of life she is entering. She is a teenager now and beginning the process of individuation.
Pisces: Bruno (February 19—March 20)
Pisces is a mutable water sign and the last sign of the zodiac. Pisces are known for being a little crazy, avoiding reality, and their need for creative expression. Bruno's gift of second sight (having prophetic visions) is directly linked to Pisces' intuition, giving them a reputation for being psychic. Pisces, like Bruno, is compassionate, fearful, and a little sad. Like all water signs, Bruno is sensitive, emotional, and makes his decisions based on feelings rather than logic, as he did when he vanished after seeing his confusing vision about Mirabel.
A mutable water sign, Pisces are natural empaths. Leading Bruno's community and family to blame him for his ominous predictions rather than realizing he was simply the messenger. Pisces lack boundaries, and taking responsibility for others' feelings is an example of these permeable boundaries. Bruno's visions are his gift and also his curse because he could not separate who he is from what he sees. This leads to Bruno running away, wanting to protect Mirabel, sacrificing himself and his own happiness, as Pisces is prone to do. Pisces are allergic to reality and are more comfortable living in fantasy as Bruno does while living in his family's home walls rather than dealing with their problems head-on.
