MTV Considering Rebooting Teen Wolf As An Anthology Series
MTV may not be out of the Teen Wolf business just yet. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the network is in early talks with the show's creator Jeff Davis to reboot the series as an anthology following its finale this summer, with the remake featuring a new cast and setting.
Teen Wolf's final season isn't set to begin until July 30, but the network is clearly already feeling the loss of the show, which has been a fixture in their line-up since 2011. The anthology would feature mostly new characters, although THR notes that there is room for some returning characters as well. The potential to join the reboot won't be the only way the adventures of the current Beacon Hills gang will continue either– Davis and MTV plan to launch a podcast after the series finale to carry on the story.
"These characters and these stories have hit a peak," MTV president Chris McCarthy said. "We are talking with Jeff about how do we actually keep that franchise alive. And the beauty of the evolution of media is you can see the series going on through a series of podcasts and then see a resurrection of a new class in a couple years."
Teen Wolf has been on the air for a long time, but the fan base hasn't diminished. The final season trailer became MTV's most streamed of all time, while the show continues to dominate social media and fan conversation during every episode. McCarthy says that he believes that this popularity is because the themes of the show resonate with viewers, something which he hopes will continue on through the podcasts and the rebooted series.
"How do we keep this franchise alive in podcasts, in the spirit of Serial, and then how do we actually reboot an entire new class?" he said. "Because the heart of MTV is around these timeless issues of young people and coming of age, but the timely piece will be the whole new cast, new set of issues and stories to explore through them. With Teen Wolf, we have such a beautiful gem. And when you have a creator like Jeff that is such an amazing partner and the fan base that is hungry for more, we're crazy not to."
As McCarthy notes, the reboot of the show won't come right away, as he wants to give the series finale at least a year to "marinate" before launching into the search for a new story and a new cast. However, the idea that the show will continue on through podcasts and through a potential reboot should help to soften the blow as fans watch the Beacon Hills gang sign off this summer. While we wait to see how their adventures will conclude, see the TV show finales that blew everyone away.
