Red Flags In Parker Schnabel And Todd Hoffman's Relationship On Gold Rush
As key players in Discovery's popular "Gold Rush" reality series, mine bosses Parker Schnabel and Todd Hoffman have a relationship that might best be summed up as "complicated." Striking a ratings motherload for Discovery when it launched in 2010, the show (originally titled "Gold Rush: Alaska") followed small teams of competitive, hard-driving miners on their long-shot quests to hit big-time pay dirt in the risky world of gold prospecting (per IMDb).
In the series' early days, one-time Oregon miner Todd Hoffman and his crew were central to the action, as viewers followed his journey to Alaska, discovered how he learned the mining trade from his father, and that hard economic times had sparked his own dreams of striking it rich in the Far North. Young newcomer Parker Schnabel, on the other hand, only showed up on the series sporadically at first, but over time played an increasingly important role on the show.
But as growing conflicts in their relationship on "Gold Rush" would illustrate, Schnabel was more to Hoffman than just another miner staking his claim to fame and fortune on the series.
Schnabel made remarks that upset Hoffman
Attracting a large fan following for his youthful energy and outspoken nature, Parker Schnabel soon became the show's most popular star, with his crew's efforts eclipsing Hoffman's and occupying more and more screen time in subsequent seasons. But the fact is, with the series' narrative of Hoffman's veteran miner vs Schnabel's brash newbie, it's no surprise that the two men developed a competitive mindset.
Unfortunately, this mindset appeared to grow into what might be best described as a clash of very different personalities. As reported in an Outsider article about Todd Hoffman's new "Gold Rush" spin-off series "The Dirt," Hoffman addressed the differences between the two strong-willed miners and some of Schnabel's less-than-friendly comments on the show, as when the younger man implied sloppy mining technique on Hoffman's part. He said, "I remember when Parker started saying some things about me. Things that you see afterward — you see them play out, and you don't wanna get into that TV stuff. And at some point you realize, we're just apples and oranges."
Schnabel felt that Hoffman actually hated him
And while Hoffman more or less said their rocky dynamic was simply that of two people with different personalities, Parker Schnabel had a very different take on the issue, apparently seeing one particular thing in their relationship that served as a major warning sign.
Schnabel spoke to Channel Guide Magazine about appearing on "Gold Rush: The Dirt" with Hoffman, where they were able to discuss some on-screen moments for the first time. Discussing the rivalry that grew between the two of them, Schnabel revealed that the primary red flag he saw was actually more than just a flag. In fact, it was an unmistakable red, flashing alert: "For me, I thought it was just a friendly competition between Todd and I. But the thing I took away from sitting down with Todd... is that Todd really doesn't like me, which I'm not sure if that means I've done something right or done something wrong. He has a very personal dislike for me. I don't know if I should go so far as to say hatred but it borderlines on that."
Schnabel admitted that he doesn't know where the dislike comes from, but whatever the cause, it seems that Schnabel and Hoffman's relationship will always be pretty rocky.
