The Guinness World Record You Didn't Know Big Bang Theory Held
Created by Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady, "The Big Bang Theory" was praised for its nerdy brand of humor, running the gamut from hardcore fan culture references to eccentric astrophysical theory. The show's success — and particularly the popularity of the character of Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons) — even led to the creation of a prequel series titled "Young Sheldon," which follows Sheldon (here played by Iain Armitage) trying to fit in as a child prodigy attending high school. "Young Sheldon," which contains answers to lingering mysteries from "The Big Bang Theory," is currently airing on CBS.
Even though many consider Penny (Kaley Cuoco) and Leonard (Johnny Galecki) to be the main couple on "The Big Bang Theory", Sheldon and Amy Farrah Fowler (Mayim Bialik) frequently stole the show. Sheldon was such a unique and oftentimes neurotic character, but viewers got to see a more caring and down-to-earth side of him through his relationship with Amy. Even though Amy didn't make her first appearance until Season 3, her character was teased early on in the show, and after meeting through an online dating setup orchestrated by Wolowitz (Simon Helberg) and Raj (Kunal Nayyar), it took months of texting back and forth for the pair to meet up again. As the series progresses, it becomes clear that Sheldon and Amy's love for each other goes far deeper than their shared passion for science.
With their eerily similar personalities and rapier wit, watching Sheldon and Amy's romance evolve was something really special. In fact, the pairing was such a fan-favorite that it broke an impressive Guinness World Record.
The Big Bang Theory hookup fans were eager to see
The record-breaking episode of "The Big Bang Theory" aired during the show's ninth season. Titled "The Opening Night Excitation," the episode features Sheldon and Amy (Shamy, as the shippers call them) finally taking their relationship to the next level.
After an initial agreement to not engage in physical contact, Sheldon and Amy eventually kissed and established a more dynamic relationship. For years, Sheldon and Amy fans had been waiting for the moment when the socially awkward pair would hang up their lab coats and jump into bed. The highly anticipated hookup, when it finally happened, drew in over a whopping 24 million people! That viewership ultimately broke the Guinness World Record for the highest number of people in a live audience for a television show ever recorded, as was promptly boasted by CBS (and shared via the official Twitter account of "The Big Bang Theory").
Actress Mayim Bialik agreed that it was time for Amy and Sheldon to take this next step. "We do a lot of things on our show, so it's never really been about will Sheldon and Amy have sex?" Bialik said (via TV Insider). "But it is a big deal, and Amy is shocked." To say that Sheldon and Amy's relationship was a slow burn would be an understatement, but it was all worth it in the end. The series concluded with Amy and Sheldon happily married.
