The Obi-Wan Kenobi Teaser Trailer Moment That Gave Star Wars Fans Chills
After years of waiting, "Star Wars" fans have finally gotten their first look at "Obi-Wan Kenobi." Set 10 years after the events of 2005's "Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith," the series picks up with Obi-Wan (Ewan McGregor) when he is living in exile on Tatooine and watching over a young Luke Skywalker from afar. The show will mark the first time that McGregor has appeared on-screen as Obi-Wan Kenobi since "Revenge of the Sith," which is part of the reason why there's an added level of anticipation surrounding the new Disney+ original.
Fortunately, the first trailer for "Kenobi" doesn't give "Star Wars" fans any reason to believe their excitement for it is misplaced. In addition to featuring several moments with McGregor's Obi-Wan, the teaser also gives fans their first looks at some of the show's Inquisitor villains in action and even teases the looming presence of Hayden Christensen's Darth Vader over its story.
However, for all of its many awe-inspiring visual moments and Easter eggs, it's actually the music that plays throughout the first "Obi-Wan Kenobi" teaser that has "Star Wars" fans everywhere practically giddy with excitement.
Star Wars fans love the music in the Obi-Wan Kenobi teaser
The first trailer for "Obi-Wan Kenobi" is surprisingly action-packed and propulsive, which some fans may not have expected considering it is set during its titular character's exile on Tatooine. Part of the reason why the teaser is so engaging though is that it is partially set to "Duel of the Fates," which just so happens to be one of the most iconic musical themes in "Star Wars" history.
Composed by John Williams, the theme appears for the first time in "Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace" during the film's climactic duel between Obi-Wan, Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson), and Darth Maul (Ray Park). In other words, not only is it one of the most beloved pieces of music that Williams has ever composed for a "Star Wars" film, but it's also one that is forever tied to McGregor's Obi-Wan. As a result, "Star Wars" fans are being understandably vocal about their excitement over the theme's inclusion in the "Kenobi" teaser.
In the trailer's YouTube comments section, one user wrote, "When they played 'Duel of The Fates' I got chills. What a fantastic trailer!" Meanwhile, in a Reddit thread dedicated to discussing the "Kenobi" teaser, u/therealflyingtoastr wrote, "Crazy how 'Duel of the Fates' can still give me goosebumps from the first note two decades later." In the same thread, Redditor u/znstone echoed their fellow fan's sentiments, writing, "'Duel of the Fates' hit and it sent me to another galaxy. One that's far, far away."
Taking all of this into account, it seems fair to say that the first trailer for "Obi-Wan Kenobi" probably elicited the exact reaction from fans that Lucasfilm hoped it would — and that's partly thanks to the teaser's use of "Duel of the Fates."
