The One Thing You'll Never See Tommy Shelby Do On Peaky Blinders
This year sees the final outing of the "Peaky Blinders," Birmingham's most feared gang, who are going out on a tense and treacherous season that could see the end of the legendary Thomas Shelby (Cillian Murphy). The WWI veteran returned from battle to build an empire by any means necessary and has faced tragedy and danger at every turn. Incredibly though, he's powered through beating the odds and those that thought they could bring down the Shelby name (many of which died trying). It makes sense then that given the busy life from the head of the family, there are some things Tommy just can't fit into his busy schedule crammed with criminal activity and secret missions from the government.
While he may look good in slow-motion, Mr. Shelby is always on the move, planning either his next big score or stealing it from someone else. As a result, there's one thing that Tommy very rarely does. It's something we've only seen him do once during the entire run of "Peaky Blinders" and may get you hungry at even the thought of it — that's if you've got the stomach for it.
Tommy Shelby never eats in Peaky Blinders
While some actors have been known to chow down any chance they get (we're looking at you, Brad Pitt), Cillian Murphy's legendary gangster is the total opposite. Since "Peaky Blinders" began in 2013, Tommy has only been seen eating once through the whole series. The notable moment was barely even a meal either, as Tommy ate with Charlie on a trip to Cardiff, following the death of his wife, Grace (Annabelle Wallis).
In an interview with Ali Plumb, the man behind the iconic cap was informed while he'd been seen drinking around 200 times, he revealed the discovered detail of Thomas Shelby's diet, or lack thereof. "These things develop over the course of the series; for example, we'd gotten through the first two series, and we realized Tommy has never eaten, we've never seen Tommy eat," Murphy revealed. Even in locations where food was on the menu, the actor revealed that his character had stayed clear of every single course. "He's sat down at tables but has never consumed a morsel, so then we made it kind of a running gag. So throughout the 36 hours of television, Tommy Shelby never consumes anything, except ... a sprig of mint he has with his son."
Of course, there's still a final season to go for "Peaky Blinders," so Tommy may sit down for a meal yet. Let's just hope it's not his last.
