Obi-Wan Kenobi Movie Reportedly In The Works
Disney has started to develop a standalone film in the Star Wars universe centering on Obi-Wan Kenobi, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
The news comes after a long stretch of rumors that the company would explore further character-focused films from the classic saga following the release of its yet-untitled Han Solo movie. Sources stress that the project is still in the early going, with no script or actor yet attached.
THR reports that Disney has approached filmmaker Stephen Daldry about directing the movie, with both parties in early discussions regarding his involvement. Daldry, an English director, previously helmed The Hours, The Reader, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, and is also directing the film adaptation of Broadway musical Wicked, to be released in 2019.
There is no word yet on whether Ewan McGregor, who played the Jedi in the three prequel episodes of the Star Wars saga, will be involved with the film in any way, though the actor has expressed interest in the past in returning to the role. Though no development has officially been verified yet, Disney is also reportedly exploring ideas for movies centered on the lives of the Jedi Master Yoda and the bounty hunter Boba Fett.
The next movie in the Star Wars saga, The Last Jedi, will be released on December 15, followed by the Han Solo movie on May 25, 2018. Beyond Episode IX in 2019, no other films in the franchise have been announced.
