Behind The Scenes Of The Wonder Woman Beach Battle

There are several significant battles in Wonder Woman, but the first one had a defining impact on Diana (Gal Gadot).

In a new behind-the-scenes feature (via Entertainment Weekly), we get to see how director Patty Jenkins created the beach battle scene that brings German soldiers to Themyscira. The native Amazons defend their paradise island in brutal fashion, which Jenkins said has a huge impact on the future Wonder Woman.

"The beach battle was defined by one thing, which is Diana's point of view," Jenkins said. "She has grown up with this idyllic, romantic idea of these Amazons all around her and battle and training. And she wants to be one of them. She's seen them train in a very fair and organized way, where they all fight, and there are rules."

Jenkins said the battle was important for two major reasons. "So this battle, what was fascinating to me [is] it's the first time Diana sees her own people turn and this other side of them, which is brutal and capable and willing to wage a battle," Jenkins said. "And she sees the brutality of man."

Much of the sequence was shot on a real beach in Italy, with female athletes from around the globe playing the Amazonian warriors. In the behind-the-scenes clip, Jenkins shouts direction to stars Gadot and Chris Pine as Steve Trevor during the peak of battle as German soldiers storm the beach.

The clip comes from the upcoming digital release of Wonder Woman, which will be available Sept. 19. Watch it here.

Meanwhile, Gadot has already signed on for a sequel, and Jenkins is getting close to what could be a historic deal to return. Wonder Woman 2 is expected Dec. 13, 2019.
