The Surprising Way Elliot Page's Ex-Wife Was Involved In The Umbrella Academy
"The Umbrella Academy" has undoubtedly become a phenomenon. Many fans across the globe love the show, and it is still one of the top-performing television series in the United States (via ParrotAnalytics). The popularity of the show arguably transcended that of its 2007 comic-book predecessor "The Umbrella Academy" by My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way and Gabriel Ba. Now, with Season 3 on the way, it feels like a great time to look back at the events of the season that started it all.
With the entirety of Season 1 being about the end of the world and what the members of the Umbrella Academy can do to stop it, there are many sweet and funny moments throughout that fans might have forgotten about. These include the scene with the ice cream truck driven by Klaus (Robert Sheehan) and Diego (David Castañeda) that defused a firefight with the time-traveling duo Hazel (Cameron Britton) and ChaCha (Mary J. Blige) and the unconventional romance between Five (Aidan Gallagher) and Dolores (unnamed mannequin) while Five was dealing with the post-apocalyptic world in the future and attempting to figure out how to stop it.
A lot of these were brought to the screen by incredibly talented actors and actresses, but there is another sweet moment in particular that one actor — Elliot Page — has an even deeper tie to, thanks to some behind-the-scenes knowledge.
Dancing in the moonlight
One of the most notable scenes from "The Umbrella Academy" Season 1 is the breathtaking dance between Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman) and Luther (Tom Hopper). They are in the park underneath a beautiful array of lights, and as the song "Dancing in the Moonlight" starts playing, the pair then dance and smile, showing the audience how they truly feel about each other. Elliot Page, who portrays Viktor Hargreeves, has an especially interesting tie to this moment, despite not being in the scene himself. Page's ex-wife, Emma Portner, actually choreographed the beautiful scene and taught the actors the dance as well.
Portner is a professional dancer and choreographer, and her experience really lent a hand to the series. In an interview with Kelly Clarkson, Page recalled watching Portner direct Hopper, who is apparently not much of a dancer, saying, "[Portner] is so incredible for choreographing non-dancers ... she is just so good in breaking all that down." He also recalled how much fun it was to have Portner choreograph a dance they did together, adding that his ex-wife made it appear as if he, too, was a good dancer.
At a young age, Portner joined the National Ballet of Canada and took her dance career abroad when she moved to New York City. Shortly after moving, she began her professional endeavors by choreographing the movements for Justin Bieber's music video "Life Worth Living" and then further overseeing the dances for Bieber's world tour (via Peridance). Her years of experience truly show thanks to how wonderful the dance turned out to be and how flawless the final scene looked. Hopefully, we can look forward to more of these moments in the upcoming Season 3.
