Who Is The God With The Lightning Bolt In The Thor: Love And Thunder Teaser?
When it seemed as though fans would positively burst with no trailer for "Thor: Love and Thunder" in sight, everyone was finally rewarded. With only three months before Taika Waititi's new Marvel film premieres, the first look at Thor's new adventure finally dropped this morning. Though it's only a minute and a half, there is much to dissect in the new teaser, which opens with an '80s-inspired aesthetic along with a rendition of the Guns N' Roses song "Sweet Child o' Mine."
Many familiar faces are returning, including Korg (voiced by Waititi himself), Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), and most of the Guardians of the Galaxy, and there is even a glimpse at the end of Natalie Portman's Jane Foster wielding Mjolnir. For one brief moment, the teaser also introduces another god who appears to share Thor's affinity for lightning. However, since his face is not shown, many may be wondering who this new god is.
Thor isn't the only god of the skies
With Thor and Loki's long history in Marvel Comics as well as Norse mythology, it stands to reason that there would be more gods up for grabs. The newest god unveiled in the teaser is actually one of the oldest, and the answer to his identity lies in Greek mythology (as well as comic canon). Last year, Russell Crowe announced that he would be taking up the mantle of Zeus, god of lightning and ruler of Olympus, on the radio talk show "Joy Breakfast with the Murphys "(via CinemaBlend). Known for seducing women and occasionally turning into animals, Zeus is one of the most well-known gods in human lore (via Britannica).
Like Thor, Zeus appears to share many attributes with his mythological counterpart. He has the power to wield lightning and makes quite a few appearances in the comics, first appearing in a run titled "Venus." Since the character had no lines and only a brief shot in the teaser, there is a lot yet to be discovered about him, including how many — if any — of his fellow Olympians fans can expect to see. But with Crowe's pedigree of big-budget films as well as his experience in comedies, there is no doubt that he is the right choice for Taika Waititi's anticipated fun-filled, no-holds-barred experience.
