Laverne Cox To Lead Psychic Drama For ABC

Orange is the New Black's Laverne Cox is teaming up with Elizabeth Banks for a new ABC drama. Variety reports that Cox is set to star in the Banks-executive produced series Spirited as a fake psychic who realizes that she has the ability to really communicate with the dead. With her newfound powers, she decides to let go of her con-woman past and start helping people.

Banks will executive produce the show through her Brownstone Productions banner; her husband, Max Handelman, will also executive produce. The show comes from writer and executive producer Heather Mitchell, who has written for Scandal and recently developed Still Star-Crossed for Shondaland. (The show was canceled after one season.)

This is not the first time Cox and Banks have teamed up for a potential series. Back at the beginning of pilot season, Cox bounced back from the early cancellation of her CBS procedural Doubt when she was cast in the Banks-executive produced pilot The Trustee. The buddy cop comedy had a stacked cast also featuring Being Human's Meaghan Rath and The Walking Dead's Michael Cudlitz; however, the show didn't make it to series.

Spirited has a bit more weight behind it, with a put-pilot commitment at the network. Cox, who has been nominated for two Emmy Awards for her work on Orange is the New Black, is the first trans woman of color to have a leading role on a mainstream TV drama, and many fans would be very happy to see her back in another big role on the small screen.

While we wait to see if Spirited makes it to series, see what TV shows you have to look forward to this fall.
