Rocket Raccoon's Origin Story To Be Explained In Future Marvel Movie
If you think you know how Rocket came to be the cynical, talking raccoon we've seen in Guardians of the Galaxy, you might be a little off.
Director James Gunn recently said at the Hasbro HasCon (via MCU Exchange) that there are plans to tell Rocket's origin story in a future Marvel movie, and it will slightly differ from that in the comics.
"We are going to learn more about where Rocket (voiced by Bradley Cooper) comes from in the coming sagas," he said. "It's going to be a little different from the comics. We already know a lot about from where he came from. It's a little bit more horrible than what it is in the comics when you come down to it. We will learn more about that."
First introduced in a 1976 issue of Marvel Preview, Rocket is a genetically modified raccoon who was experimented on to become a chief law officer on Halfworld, a colony for the mentally ill. He and his friend Wal-Rus protected the planet and its inhabitants from potential threats including the villainous mole Judson Jakes. He even met up with the Hulk for a while before the Avenger returned to Earth. Rocket was able to cure some of the colony on Halfworld before he joined the Guardians of the Galaxy.
Gunn didn't specify if we'd learn more about Rocket's past in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, or if it would be in another movie like Avengers: Infinity War or Avengers 4. It would be pretty cool if he and the Hulk go way back, but that might not work with the current MCU timeline. Although the Hulk definitely makes it into space for the events of Thor: Ragnarok. Vin Diesel (who voices Groot) also thinks it's "inevitable" that we'll see a Rocket and Groot spinoff at some point.
