The Divisive Star Wars Character Ewan McGregor Would Love To See Return To The Franchise

The anticipation is building for "Star Wars" fans with the release of the Disney+ series "Obi-Wan Kenobi" set for May 27. The official trailer for the show that will again feature Ewan McGregor's portrayal of the iconic character along with Hayden Christensen's return to Darth Vader has given fans a lot of information. We are able to see the Grand Inquisitor in action, the return of Joel Edgerton's Uncle Owen Lars, and even a young Luke Skywalker (Grant Feely) pretending to pod race, among other details.

"Star Wars" is notorious for being a massive and expansive fictional universe with plenty of stories to tell, which is why fans have been given the sequel trilogy, "Rogue One," "Solo," "The Mandalorian," "The Book of Boba Fett," and a number of other shows and movies that lie within "Star Wars" continuity over recent years. In these, fans have seen the stories furthered through not only well-known characters but also new ones. With "Obi-Wan Kenobi," fans are sure to get both never-before-seen characters and familiar faces from Kenobi's past. Some have even wondered whether Liam Neeson's Qui-Gon Jinn from "Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace" will make a reappearance as a Force ghost, although those rumors were quelled by Neeson even though he noted that he would be up for it (via Collider).

However, there's one specific "Star Wars" character from Obi-Wan's past that McGregor himself would love to see return to the franchise. Here's what we know.

Ewan McGregor would love to see Jar Jar Binks return to Star Wars

In a recent interview with Vanity Fair where three of the cast members of "Obi-Wan Kenobi" each answered seven "Star Wars"-related questions, Ewan McGregor had an interesting response to the prompt of which "Star Wars" character he'd like to meet and why. Although it was a relatively fast reply, McGregor noted that it would have to be Jar Jar Binks (Ahmed Best), explaining that he'd like to meet him again after Obi-Wan's previous experiences with him in the prequel trilogy. Of course, fans were able to see Jar Jar briefly throughout the rest of the prequel trilogy and even in "Star Wars: The Clone Wars."

The character of Jar Jar is known to be divisive among "Star Wars" fans, with some being aggressively against him and others for the Gungan who initially assisted Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon in the events of "The Phantom Menace." For some time, there was even a theory floating around that Jar Jar was secretly a Sith (via Reddit).

If Jar Jar were to appear again, based on what fans have witnessed after the fall of the Republic, we would likely see him still an outcast from his people since they believed he took part in the rise of the Galactic Empire. However, based on McGregor's saying "Maybe we could bring [Ahmed Best] back," it's almost certain that fans won't see Jar Jar just yet in "Obi-Wan Kenobi." Only time will tell.
