The Originals Character You Are Based On Your Zodiac Sign
"The Originals" is a spin-off from "The Vampire Diaries" that follows the Mikaelson family back to their home in New Orleans. The Mikaelson clan helped build New Orleans and ruled over the city for hundreds of years before fleeing from a vicious vampire hunter. They return to New Orleans nearly 100 years after abandoning the city to discover the vampire Marcel Gerard (Charles Michael Davis), who was once an adoptive member of their family, has taken charge. Marcel rules over the witches and werewolves of the Crescent City with an iron hand, using fear and violence to maintain his grip on power. Like "The Vampire Diaries," this spin-off explores the power struggles between witches, werewolves, and vampires amidst the humans who live in ignorance of the existence of these powerful creatures.
"The Originals" is an excellent example of the many admirable and challenging attributes of the zodiac signs, as reflected in the characters of this darkly seductive series. Our notion of who is the villain and who is the hero is constantly shifting, with each character believing they are in the right. This series explores what family is while illustrating how no one is all good or bad, and that everyone is capable of change. Keep reading if you want to know which "The Originals" character you are based on your zodiac sign.
Aries: Mikael (March 20 - April 19)
The powerful witch Esther turned her husband Mikael (Sebastian Roché) and their children into vampires after their youngest child was slain by werewolves in the forest outside their Viking village. Klaus Mikaelson was the illegitimate son of Esther and a werewolf, leading to Mikael thinking of Klaus as an abomination after his werewolf curse was activated and Klaus became a werewolf-vampire hybrid. Mikael became a vampire hunter in pursuit of his children because of his hatred for Klaus.
Like Aries, Mikael is a powerful and brave warrior. Mars, the Roman god of war, is the ruling planet of Aries. Mars was the protector of Rome and is associated with the spirit of battle, something Mikael exemplifies. We perceive Mikael as a villain in "The Originals" but he thinks of himself as a protector of the weak and perceives his struggle against his homicidal children as a holy war of sorts, focusing all of his fiery passion and energy on his goal.
Aries is a cardinal fire sign, known for its courage and confidence, attributes we see reflected in Mikael's dogged pursuit of Klaus. We also see the impatient, impulsive, and aggressive nature Aries is known for reflected in Mikael's actions, and the cardinal modality of Aries is clearly reflected in Mikael's take-charge attitude. According to Cosmopolitan, an Aries will "burn down walls" to get what they want. Mikael has literally burned cities to the ground in his quest to exterminate Klaus, so this one definitely checks out.
Taurus: Jackson Kenner (April 19 - May 20)
Jackson Kenner (Nathan Parsons) enters "The Originals" as the alpha of the Crescent Pack, werewolves cursed to remain in their wolf form except on the full moon. Hayley Marshall (Phoebe Tonkin) and Jackson form a quick bond and he becomes Hayley's protector in Season 1. After returning to his human form, Jackson marries Hayley in Episode 14 of Season 2, uniting the two bloodlines of the Crescent Wolf Clan and sharing Hayley's wolf-hybrid attributes with the pack.
Like a true Taurus, Jackson is reliable, patient, and devoted. He is a fair, kind, and loyal alpha, extending his protection and love to Hayley and her daughter Hope. Taurus is a fixed earth sign known for its stable and mellow nature. The fixed modality of a Taurus makes them determined and loyal, attributes Jackson exemplifies — but fixed signs are also known for having a stubborn and possessive streak, traits that surface when Jackson becomes jealous of Hayley and Elijah's connection.
Being an earth element, that stubborn nature is amplified. Earth signs don't like change and aren't comfortable taking big risks. Jackson's practical nature was a motivator in his marriage to Hayley, making their partnership a strategic union to cement leadership amongst the wolves. But earth signs are also known for their sensuality, which is emphasized in Taurus. Their planetary ruler is Venus, the Roman goddess of love, making Taureans passionate people who give their hearts in love.
Gemini: Kol Mikaelson (May 20 - June 21)
Gemini is a mutable air sign symbolized by the twins. Kol Mikaelson (Nathaniel Buzolic) exemplifies the dualistic nature of this sign, with his personality but also because his spirit lives within two bodies, connecting "The Vampire Diaries" and "The Originals." Before Esther made Kol into an original vampire, he enjoyed practicing magic, having an aptitude his siblings (other than Freya) didn't possess. When Kol is resurrected from the other side after being killed in "The Vampire Diaries," he inhabits the body of a New Orleans witch. Kol is able to reconnect with his witch roots, falling in love with Davina Claire (Danielle Campbell).
As a witch, Kol exemplifies the positive traits of Gemini — or the light twin. Affectionate, curious, intelligent, and funny, Kol wins Davina's heart before he dies. When Kol is resurrected (for the second time) by Davina, he comes back as an original vampire and is tortured by his blood lust. This version of Kol embodies the negative traits of Gemini. Their mercurial nature defines the dark twin, tapping into Gemini's planetary ruler Mercury, the trickster god. In Kol, we also see Mercury's status as a psychopomp, reflected in his multiple visits to the afterlife.
All air signs intellectualize their emotions, but the dark twin, like Kol, lacks empathy. This is dangerous when combined with Gemini's mutable modality, making Kol unpredictable. The spontaneity of mutable signs can be a big positive, but in the hands of the dark twin, this can lead to an unpredictable person with a propensity to lie and play cruel games, as highlighted in Kol's volatility and cold indifference.
Cancer: Hayley Marshall (June 21 - July 22)
Cancer is a cardinal water sign, ruled by the Moon. The connections between Hayley Marshall (Phoebe Tonkin) and Cancer are abundant and obvious to viewers of "The Originals." The first link is Hayley's crescent moon birthmark, marking her as a member of the Crescent Wolf Clan of New Orleans. Hayley and Klaus met in "The Vampire Diaries" where she became a hybrid and shared a night of drunken passion, leading to her being pregnant in the spin-off. Hayley's pregnancy is another symbolic link to the sign of Cancer.
Ruled by the Moon, Cancer is the archetypal mother of the zodiac, embodying the feminine energies associated with the cycles of the moon and fertility. Hayley's werewolf nature is also linked to the moon, transforming with the full moon until she becomes a hybrid. The moon dictates the tides on earth, something that is symbolic of its effect on a Cancer's emotions. Water signs are sensitive and intuitive people who feel their emotions strongly. Just because Hayley wears armor — like the crab — doesn't mean she isn't vulnerable.
Their cardinal modality imbues Cancer with drive, as we see reflected in Hayley's assertive, take-charge attitude. Cancer is a sign focused on family and home, something that shaped Hayley's choices, personality, and life after her adoptive family rejected her when she became a werewolf. Hayley's desperate need to discover her roots motivated the awful things she did in "The Vampire Diaries," but once she became a mother, the focus of her life was protecting Hope.
Leo: Rebekah Mikaelson (July 22 - August 22)
Like the regal lion representing the Zodiac sign of Leo, Rebekah Mikaelson (Claire Holt) lived as vampire royalty for a millennium as the only female original vampire. She spent much of her vampire existence wishing she could have a normal human life, find love, and become a mother. Leo is a fixed fire sign ruled by the sun, known for its big heart and matching ego. Rebekah embodies Leo's positive traits, proving herself to be a courageous protector of her niece Hope, but also revealing herself to be arrogant and self-centered, big Leo giveaways.
Leo's fixed modality means they can be extra stubborn, but they are also incredibly loyal, something we see Rebekah exhibit repeatedly when she sacrifices the independent life she longs for to help her family. Leo's fire element means they are confident and independent people who are passionate and enthusiastic lovers. Rebekah's whole life is a search for love, with her brother Klaus interfering with her happiness.
Leo's fiery nature makes them bossy, so they need a partner who can hold their own. Rebekah finds her match in Marcel Gerard (Charles Michael Davis). Despite Marcel's rivalry with Rebekah's brothers, Marcel and Rebekah remain drawn to each other. They are complete opposites, yet they have a natural understanding, hinting at their zodiac signs being a polarity — sitting directly across from each other on the zodiac.
Virgo: Freya Mikaelson (August 22 - September 22)
Freya Mikaelson (Riley Voelkel) joins the story in Season 2 when we learn that the oldest Mikaelson sister didn't actually die of the plague as their mother Esther said, but was given to Esther's sister Dahlia, who practiced powerful black magic and taught Freya a thing or two. Freya was placed in a magical sleep for over a century before joining her siblings in New Orleans in modern times.
Freya is a powerful witch who uses her magic to protect and help her family, although occasionally her loyalties are divided because she is a witch and not a vampire like her siblings. Freya repeatedly resurrects people with her magic, as she does with Elijah in Season 4 and bringing Finn back in Season 2. This ability links Freya to Virgo's planetary ruler, Mercury, who is a psychopomp. Freya works as a reverse conductor, bringing souls back from the afterlife.
Virgo is a mutable earth sign, known for being analytical, practical, and kind. Freya can be relied upon, always putting her family first, often above her own safety. This sense of duty Freya exemplifies comes from Virgo's earth element. She is also intelligent and organized, always researching magical solutions to her family's abundant problems. This comes from having a mutable modality. Mutable signs are problem solvers who can think outside of the box, often approaching life from a philosophical standpoint as Freya does. This mutable earth combination makes Virgo more flexible than other earth signs and more steadfast than other mutable signs.
Libra: Camille O'Connell (September 22 - October 23)
Camille O'Connell (Leah Pipes) is an excellent embodiment of Libra, a cardinal air sign known for being diplomatic, fair-minded, and harmonious. Symbolized by the scales of justice, Libras hate injustice and are drawn to service work such as becoming a social justice lawyer or, in Camille's case, studying psychology to become a counselor or social worker. Libras are great at looking at situations from multiple perspectives, making them excellent at understanding people's motivations.
As an air sign, Libras are open-minded and intelligent people who can be a little indecisive. Libra's personality shifts depending upon who they are around, making them multifaceted. We see this versatility in Camille's personality, especially after she becomes a vampire. As a new vampire, Camille, who was once sweet and accommodating, delves into the darker traits of Libra, discovering she has a talent for manipulation.
Camille has grit and determination, something she gets from Libra's cardinal modality. Cardinal signs are natural leaders, and Camille holds her own with the supernatural creatures of New Orleans as a human and as a vampire. Venus, the Roman goddess of love, rules Libra. We see Libra's emotional side in Camille and Klaus' mutual regard for each other. Camille brings out a softer side in Klaus, encouraging his better impulses and proving he isn't heartless. When Camille died in Season 3 from a venomous bite, it was a blow to Klaus' developing sense of morality.
Scorpio: Hope Mikaelson (October 23 - November 22)
Hope Mikaelson is just a baby in the first few seasons of "The Originals," but after a time jump for Season 4, the personality and talents of a tween Hope (Summer Fontana) emerge. Season 5 jumps another seven years into the future where a teenage Hope (now played by Danielle Rose Russell) proves to embody the characteristics of a Scorpio, a misunderstood fixed water sign with two ruling planets.
Scorpio's ancient ruler, Mars, the Roman god of war, imbues this sign with the bravery of a warrior but also makes it prone to violence. Hope certainly exhibits these traits, yet they are unsurprising attributes for the daughter of Klaus Mikaelson. Scorpio's fixed modality makes Hope tenacious. Once she has an idea in her head, she will do anything to accomplish her aim, as we saw in Season 5 when she reclaimed the dark magic of the Hollow from her family so they could all be together again. Although we shouldn't have been surprised by this, as fixed signs are as loyal as they are stubborn.
Scorpio's modern ruler, Pluto, has associations with occultism, magic, regeneration, transformation, and destruction — associations one would expect from a powerful Mikaelson witch who is also a werewolf with a vampire side waiting to be triggered by death. These associations give Scorpio its bad reputation. What people forget about Scorpio is their water element, which makes them sensitive, intuitive, and artistic, traits reflected in the talent for painting Hope inherited from her father.
Sagittarius: Vincent Griffith (November 22 - December 21)
Vincent Griffith (Yusuf Gatewood) is a powerful witch. He is a former member of the Tremé Coven and the former Regent of the Nine Covens of New Orleans, taking on the role of a protector for his city. Vincent has big Sagittarius energy. This mutable fire sign is known for being generous, idealistic, and open-minded, traits Vincent exhibits repeatedly throughout the series. He proves his flexibility — a trait associated with a mutable modality — every time he works with both the vampire and wolf factions of New Orleans to save his city. Mutable signs are also the most philosophical, as we see in Vincent's studies and interests.
Like other fire signs, Vincent can be bossy and impulsive, sometimes reacting with pure emotion. A Sagittarius has a sarcastic sense of humor and warm heart, which easily make up for these challenging attributes. Vincent is one of the most likable characters in this series, and a Sagittarius is known to be capable of making friends wherever they roam. He exhibits the wanderlust, restlessness, and independent nature we associate with Sagittarius. He often threatens to leave, but his love for New Orleans keeps him rooted in the Crescent City.
Capricorn: Elijah Mikaelson (December 21 - January 20)
Capricorn is a cardinal earth sign associated with tradition, family, and rules. Elijah Mikaelson (Daniel Gillies) certainly views himself as the patriarch of the Mikaelson siblings, taking on a leadership role in the family, reflecting Capricorn's cardinal modality. Like Elijah, Capricorn is known for being duty-driven, unforgiving, and disciplined, traits this sign owes to its earth element.
Earth signs are inflexible but dependable and are known for being materialistic and sensual. Elijah reflects these characteristics in his immaculate suits and monogrammed cufflinks, his exquisite taste, and his appreciation of music. He spends several years when he has amnesia living in the south of France, playing piano at a restaurant and enjoying the fine wine France offers. Although Capricorns, like Elijah, can seem cold, we see his softer side in his love of Hayley and his devotion to his family.
Capricorn's planetary ruler, Saturn, has associations with boundaries, rules, tradition, and karma. Elijah carries the weight of managing his wild younger brother Klaus upon his shoulders. He's forced to impose restrictions and rules upon Klaus, trying to control the hybrid's darker nature. But this darkness is also inside of Elijah.
Elijah's complicated relationship with Klaus is echoed in Elijah's relationship with Marcel Gerard, the young slave the Mikaelson family took in and raised as a child and then turned into a vampire when he was an adult. This is symbolic of the struggle between Aquarius and Capricorn and the battle between tradition and progress.
Aquarius: Marcel Gerard (January 20 - February 18)
Marcel Gerard (Charles Michael Davis) became the king of New Orleans after the Mikaelson siblings fled the city in 1919. When the Mikaelsons return, wanting to re-establish control in the city at the beginning of "The Originals," they meet with resistance. Marcel's relationship with the Mikaelson siblings who adopted him, saving him from slavery, is complex, contentious, and dominated by the archetypal theme of the son rebelling against the father.
Marcel is the embodiment of Aquarius, a sign known for being progressive, independent, and temperamental. Aquarius is a fixed air sign with two ruling planets. It shares its ancient ruler, Saturn, with Capricorn, making this sign highly attuned to rules, boundaries, and power structures. But, Aquarius' modern planetary ruler, Uranus, gives this sign a unique relationship with these structures. Uranus is associated with liberation, progress, and innovation. Marcel is a world builder and a rebel who believes you must tear down one world to build something better.
Aquarius' fixed modality imbues them with determination, although they can sometimes be so focused on the big picture they are blind to how their idealistic vision affects individuals. Marcel is blind to how his iron rule has negatively affected the witches and wolves while benefiting the vampires. Signs with an air element are excellent communicators with quick minds, and we see this in Marcel's strategic thinking and his skill as a community organizer.
Pisces: Davina Claire (February 18 - March 20)
Pisces is the last sign of the zodiac and therefore has a connection with the afterlife and the spirit realm, making Davina Claire (Danielle Campbell) the most obvious representation of Pisces in "The Originals." She was sacrificed twice and resurrected twice, after all. On top of that, Pisces is a mutable water sign known for being gentle, intuitive, and wise beyond its years. Davina embodies these traits. She is a kind and loyal friend to Marcel and Josh, but like all Pisces, she can be overly trusting, leading to her feeling betrayed when she is taken advantage of.
Davina spends Season 1 feeling like a pawn, growing in resentment and frustration until her magical powers are as uncontrollable as her emotions. Water signs are known for being sensitive, creative, and nurturing. But these emotions can feel all-consuming, proving challenging for a young, powerful, and inexperienced witch to manage. Her resentments lead to her becoming defensive and angry, lashing out with her newfound powers.
But, like a true Pisces, when Davina realizes her powers are endangering the city and people of New Orleans, she agrees to complete the harvest ritual, sacrificing herself for the safety of others. Despite Davina being a witch, she works with the vampires, proving she has the open-mindedness associated with mutable signs like Pisces. This lack of judgment also allows Davina to see the good in people, leading to her relationship with Kol Mikaelson.
Ophiuchus: Klaus Mikaelson (November 29 - December 17)
Ophiuchus isn't technically a zodiac sign, but it suits Klaus Mikaelson (Joseph Morgan) perfectly. As the first vampire-werewolf hybrid, Klaus is an enigma and the hardest to kill of the original vampires. His hybrid status earned him the hatred of his step-father, Mikael, the vampire who hunts vampires. Magnetic, temperamental, jealous, and power-hungry, these Ophiuchus traits describe Klaus down to the ground.
Klaus has the magnetism of Scorpio and the fire of Sagittarius, making him a blend of the two signs on either side of Ophiuchus. The mythology associated with this constellation reflects Klaus' personality perfectly. Ophiuchus is the serpent bearer and snakes have a symbolic connection to rebirth and transformation in many ancient mythologies. Klaus is a creature of transformation and immortality, a man who can't be killed, as he loves to tell his foes during his many power struggles with the vampire, werewolf, and witch factions of New Orleans.
In Greek mythology, Asclepius was a demigod raised by Chiron and taught the healing arts. Asclepius could bring people back from the dead. As an original vampire-wolf hybrid, Klaus' bite is poisonous to vampires, but his blood is also the antidote, giving him the power to kill and also to save. Klaus does more than transform into a wolf. In "The Originals" we watch him transform from a ruthless, bloodthirsty killer into a devoted father, hellbent on protecting Hope at all costs.
