Obi-Wan Kenobi Part VI Brings Reva's Story To A Powerful Conclusion
The ending of "Obi-Wan Kenobi" brings Reva's (Moses Ingram) "Star Wars" story completely full circle, with the former Padawan-turned-Inquisitor officially deciding her own fate and (from a certain point of view) saving the galaxy in the process. Reva's inclusion in Part VI and the last portion of her "Obi-Wan Kenobi" character arc was — according to most fans — a fitting end for her.
"A wonderful conclusion for Reva," @filmsonwax wrote in June 22 tweet. "A great character and a fantastic performance by Moses Ingram." Many other tweets posted around the same time were also complimentary. @LennyRenquist wrote, "What a finale! ... Reva's ending was perfect." Similarly, @BhmizS tweeted, "Reva's arc was one of the most complex and brilliantly written stories of a character. So much depth." @JalenJColeman also added, "Reva's story arc was exceptional. Bravo Deborah Chow!"
When viewers first see Reva in "Obi-Wan Kenobi" Part VI, the ousted Third Sister is searching for Owen Lars (Joel Edgerton) on Tatooine in an attempt to reach young Luke Skywalker (Grant Feely). In Part V, Reva — as most people suspected — is revealed to be a former Jedi padawan who managed to survive Order 66 and Anakin Skywalker's infamous "youngling" attack at the Jedi temple during the final act of "Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith." Basically, she's on a Vader revenge tour and determined to do whatever it takes to get back at the murderous Sith Lord, including killing his own son. But as viewers see at the very end of the episode, not everything goes down as planned.
Reva makes the fateful decision to let Luke live
Throughout the final episode of "Obi-Wan Kenobi," Reva goes to great lengths to locate Luke Skywalker. Although her exact goals are never explicitly stated, it certainly appears that she intends to kill him. However, when she finally comes face-to-face with the future Jedi warrior, Reva instead chooses to let Luke live — turning her formerly evil character arc into a powerful redemption story.
"Reva is my favorite new character," tweeted @wolffin_about. "Her whole story was just so tragic. The message I got from her story is that we all are worthy of redemption, no matter how late we are to realize it."
At the end of Part VI, while Reva is contemplating whether to kill young Luke, she gets hit with waves of flashbacks reminding her of Anakin Skywalker's fall and transformation into Darth Vader (Hayden Christensen). At one point, Reva sees herself in Luke's place, cowering in fear just like she did at the Jedi Temple during Order 66. The former Inquisitor pulls back her lightsaber as if to strike the boy down — remembering every little thing that's happened to her and brought her to this moment — when the scene cuts away to Obi-Wan arriving on Tatooine. As he and Owen and Beru (Bonnie Piesse) look for Luke, they stumble upon a grieving Reva who is walking with him in her arms. She lays Luke, who is still alive, down at Obi-Wan's feet and begins sobbing.
What happens next is arguably the most emotional and meaningful moment in all of "Obi-Wan Kenobi."
Obi-Wan absolves Reva, setting her on a new path
While kneeling before Ewan McGregor's Obi-Wan, Reva continues to weep and begins telling the legendary Jedi Master about how she failed in her lifelong quest to kill Darth Vader. The moment ultimately results in the pair having one of the most poignant and powerful conversations in "Star Wars" history, with Obi-Wan completely absolving Reva of her wrongdoings and setting her on a new path.
"I couldn't do it. I failed them," Reva tells Kenobi at the start of the scene, in reference to her fallen padawan friends. "[Vader] killed them all, and I couldn't do it." Obi-Wan looks down at her and replies, "You haven't failed them. By showing mercy, you have given them peace. You have honored them." Reva then asks, "Have I become him [Vader]?" In response, Obi-Wan tells her, "No. You have chosen not to. Who you become now, that is up to you." We then see Reva lay down her Inquisitor lightsaber moments later, and Obi-Wan declares, "Now you're free. We both are." It's an emotional moment that not only wraps things up perfectly for Reva, but also hints at more things to possibly come from the character.
"It's so refreshing that Reva was redeemed and didn't have to die," wrote @counterfetts. "She clearly still has so much story ahead of her to tell." Similarly, @catherinesclaws tweeted: "I am legitimately SO happy that Reva lived because not only does that leave room for a Reva series, it also gives room for her to be a member of the rebellion in the future."
